Chinese companies’ awareness and perceptions of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS): evidence from a national survey in China / Yang, Lin; Li, Fengyu ; Zhang, Xian   Journal Article
Yang, Lin Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract China announced the launch of a national Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) in 2017; however, companies appear show little enthusiasm for participation in the ETS in China. This paper identifies the factors affecting companies’ awareness and perceptions of ETS by conducting a national survey based on an online questionnaire from May to November 2015 in seven carbon trading pilots. The results indicate that companies’ attitudes towards the ETS are positively influenced by government regulations and policy, public relations management and estimated economic benefit. Of these, public relations management is the decisive factor and estimated economic benefit is confirmed to be a relatively weak predictor. A company's environmental and energy strategy exerts insignificant effects on its preference for the ETS, although the sampled companies are very willing to save energy and reduce emissions. There exists an inverted U-shape relationship between a company's level of mitigation technologies and its attitudes towards the ETS. The carbon price fails to stimulate companies to upgrade mitigation technologies. The majority of companies treat participation in the ETS only as a means of improving ties with governments, as well as of earning a good social reputation, rather than as a cost-effective mechanism to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Engendering an inclusive low-carbon energy transition in Japan: Considering the perspectives and awareness of the energy poor / Chapman, Andrew   Journal Article
Chapman, Andrew Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Engendering a low-carbon energy transition is necessary to limit climate change impacts and temperature rises. Ideally, this transition would be inclusive, incorporating all stakeholders, however, the issue of energy or fuel poverty is a major obstacle to this goal. This research investigates energy poverty in Japan using a subjective, multidimensional energy poverty measure, clarifying the linkages between energy poverty and an inclusive, just transition in terms of energy system and policy awareness, behavior and preferences. Through the analysis of an original survey, we uncover that there is a marked difference between low-income and energy poverty households’ environmental awareness, and their subsequent attitude toward the low-carbon energy transition. Currently, the energy poor have a negative attitude toward the low-carbon energy transition in Japan, causing a lack of self-reported engagement which will not engender an inclusive, just transition. Our findings suggest that if the Japanese low-carbon energy transition were to be inclusive, a further 5 percent of households could participate in the low-carbon energy transition through access to solar or renewable energy capital. Findings identify the need for policies targeted at the energy poor, specifically promoting access to solar capital and low-carbon technologies, in addition to existing policies targeted at low-income households.

Exploring future scientists' awareness about and attitudes towards renewable energy sources / Karasmanaki, Evangelia   Journal Article
Karasmanaki, Evangelia Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Abundant research has focused on the public acceptance of renewable energy sources (RES) since their successful implementation is often dependent on the public. Yet, little is known about the attitudes of university students towards RES whose study field is related to the environment, even though the mindset of these students is considered relevant since they are possible experts in the RES field. To contribute to this neglected research strand, this paper aims to explore the awareness about and attitudes towards RES of students majoring in the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece. Results based on quantitative data collected via questionnaire show that the surveyed students support renewables and have awareness about the current polluting energy system. Moreover, they have positive environmental attitudes and fully recognize the need for energy transition. Finally, there are significant differences among students from different years of study, highlighting that fourth- and fifth-year students take greater interest in working in the RES sector after they complete their studies.

Measuring the Impact of Visual Multimedia on Awareness, Alertness and Behavioural Intention Towards Kidnapping Prevention Measur / Obodo, Eva   Journal Article
Obodo, Eva Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of visual multimedia in promoting security awareness, alertness and behavioural intention towards kidnapping prevention measures among secondary school students. A quasi-experimental design was used for the study and the sample was made up of 470 secondary school students. It was found that respondents in the visual multimedia group did not significantly differ from their counterparts in the non-visual multimedia group on security awareness but they significantly differed on security alertness and behaviour intention towards kidnapping prevention measures. The implication is that visual multimedia has been highlighted.

Responses of older adults to smart energy monitors / Brown, Christopher J   Journal Article
Brown, Christopher J Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract By 2020, every UK household has the option to have a Smart Energy Monitor (SEM) installed, displaying electricity consumption monetarily. The success of the £11 billion scheme in enabling people to reduce energy consumption is questioned amongst researchers and relatively little is known about older adults' (60 + years) responses to SEMs. This paper explores older adult responses to SEM feedback and compares them to those of younger-middle aged adults (25–59 years). A qualitative, interpretative methodology was used with participants from 20 households recording their SEM experiences during one month through a diary, and post-study semi-structured interview allowing methodological triangulation. Data analysis indicated that older adults were generally more aware of their energy use pre-SEM and practiced energy saving behaviours learnt from upbringing. This appeared to result in negligible positive benefits and low engagement with the device. Other limiting factors included lack of technical skills and confidence, and the risk of losing the comfort and convenience of using electrical appliances. The device also triggered negative emotions and depression amongst some older adults surrounding electricity usage, potentially leading to dangerously cold homes. Consequently, the scheme's appropriateness is questioned, especially for older adults, and improvements are suggested for SEMs and the scheme.

Three concepts of intelligence communication: awareness, advice or co-production? / Petersen, Karen Lund   Journal Article
Petersen, Karen Lund Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Communication aimed at the public has been an almost absent topic in intelligence studies. This is despite a growing recognition of the importance of communicating towards the public in preventive security, counterterrorism, cyber security and organized crime prevention. This article attends to the practice of communicating intelligence to the public. It does so in order to show the diversity of communication practices in Western intelligence today. By investigating how the intelligence community communicates about ‘communication’ to the public, the article identifies three different concepts of communication, that each exposes different understandings of the public and democratic concerns.
