Maritime destiny of Bangladesh: legacies and prospects / Kalam, Abul   Journal Article
Kalam, Abul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Bangladesh does not carry an enduring maritime legacy in its strategic formulations or in policymaking though historically the Bengalis carry significant legacies as seafarers, boat-makers, traders and shipbuilders. The recent international legal verdicts on Bangladesh’s maritime claims make a difference as these offer multifaceted prospects. The paper addresses issues and concerns regarding maritime legacies of Bangladesh and prospects generated from the verdicts. It brings together perceived national interests vis-a-vis current extended maritime territory and how all these correlate to the nation’s aspirations, touching upon the means necessary to materialise the aspirations. The paper considers trends in strategic analysis and utilises notional views of classical Chinese thinker Sun Tzu as a reference point to bring forward the maritime legacies and prospects of Bangladesh. In this context, maritime research is viewed as of decisive importance for Bangladesh that may enable the country to select the best strategic option available to ensure its sustained prosperity as a maritime nation. The paper pleads for a coherent maritime policy framework coupled with extensive research pursuits and policy coordination for a fast-track approach to development ensuring greater awareness on maritime affairs, a more secure maritime destiny, which is consistent with the nation’s strategic vision.

Maritime destiny of Bangladesh: Entwining challenges / Kalam, Abul   Journal Article
Kalam, Abul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Bangladesh won two successive international verdicts over its maritime claims with neighbouring Myanmar and India. The verdicts granted Bangladesh 200 nautical miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Its continental shelf now extends up to 354 nautical miles, with sovereign rights on all living and mineral resources. All this added to the country’s panoramic maritime domain, indubitably huge areas. Consequently, for business-related concerns, economic reasons and sustained development, the country’s new maritime space warrant measures for ensuring its destiny. Some vital concerns remain: knowledge on the resources beneath the marine/seabed or at the aquatic level; the country’s ability, skills and technology to access the resources or even its awareness of how to utilise the resources to its advantage; and, finally, the choices or means accessible for its maritime space or establishing its sway in its maritime domain. All such concerns call for rational analysis and reflection. How Bangladesh could countenance and meet the challenges of utilising its maritime spheres towards serving its overriding interests? In dealing with challenges facing the nation and actions required, the paper analyses some selected sectors that are entwined, keeping in view the conceptual-analytical trends in maritime studies. It pleads for futuristic planning and meticulous execution of neatly considered planning choices to ensure the nation a maritime destiny keeping matters of policy relevance in perspectives.
