Central Asia: the religious situation and the threat of religious extremism / Laumulin, Murat   Journal Article
Laumulin, Murat Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract In Central Asia, religion is gradually coming to the fore in everyday life as a fairly integrated phenomenon with a wide range of functions: consolidation of ethnic self-awareness, shaping spiritual and moral culture together with the awareness of being part of a religious and the world community; fulfilling social functions through religious prescriptions; formulating the ideals of social justice, as well as man's duty to the state and the state's to man, etc. Some of the functions, however, are internally contradictory: consolidation of the religious community does not always bring society together. In other words, in some cases religion might exacerbate the relations between the state and the religious part of society. Religious consolidation not infrequently revives old problems and breeds disagreements inside society; conscientious believers often make too rigid demands of the state (which turns them into the opposition), while any encroachments on the religious principle of fairness may stir up protest feelings.

Cosmos in theological scriptures / Sachdeva, Gurbachan Singh   Journal Article
Sachdeva, Gurbachan Singh Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Religions have conceptualized the cosmos, its Creator, and its origin. The major monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have philosophized on the creation of the Earth and man by a conscious act of God. The religions of the Orient-Hinduism and Sikhism-have a different visualization of the emergence of the universe and living beings on the Earth. This article provides a brief exposition and a comparative analysis of the scriptural differences in relation to the cosmos. In particular, the focus is on a comprehension expounded in Sikh scriptures with emphasis on the meaning therein for the Big Bang theory and exact time of creation, expanse of the universe, evolution of life, conservation of energy, and the end of the universe with cyclical repetition.

Ethics and Indian civilizational implications: a perspective from the Baha'i faith / Merchant, A. K   Journal Article
Merchant, A. K Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract The major civilizations of in human history have been associated with the major religious systems. Some 3,000 years ago Zoroastrianism was the religion of the "glory of ancient Persia," - the Persia that conquered" Babylon, Palestine, Egypt, and the Greek city-states. A few centuries later Judaism was the basis of Hebrew culture, which some philosophers such as Karl Jaspers regards as the greatest in history. And Jewish law has formed the I basis of common law and jurisprudence in countries all over the world. Western culture, until the rise of modem science, was dominated by Christianity. The teachings_ of Islam that burst upon world stage some 1400 years a go preserved and developed the Hellenistic heritage and gave algebra and other sciences. It was probably the greatest civilization the world had seen until the rise of the - Industrial Revolution began to transform Western culture. Today, the tumult of our age of transition is characteristic of the impetuosity and irrational instincts of youth. its follies, its prodigality, its pride, its self- assurance. its rebelliousness, and contempt of discipline.

Hebrew school in nineteenth-century Bombay: protestant missionaries, Cochin jews, and the Hebraization of India's Bene Israel community / Numark, Mitch   Journal Article
Numark, Mitch Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This paper is a study of cultural interaction and diffusion in colonial Bombay. Focusing on Hebrew language instruction, it examines the encounter between India's little-known Bene Israel Jewish community and Protestant missionaries. Whilst eighteenth and nineteenth-century Cochin Jews were responsible for teaching the Bene Israel Jewish liturgy and forms of worship, the Bene Israel acquired Hebrew and Biblical knowledge primarily from nineteenth-century Protestant missionaries. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Bene Israel community was a Konkan jati with limited knowledge of Judaism. However, by the end of the century the community had become an Indian-Jewish community roughly analogous to other Jewish communities. This paper explores how this transformation occurred, detailing the content, motivation, and means by which British and American missionaries and, to a lesser extent, Cochin Jews instructed the Bene Israel in Jewish knowledge. Through a critical examination of neglected English and Marathi sources, it reconstructs the Bene Israel perspective in these encounters and their attitude towards the Christian missionaries who laboured amongst them. It demonstrates that the Bene Israel were active participants and selective consumers in their interaction with the missionaries, taking what they wanted most from the encounter: knowledge of the Old Testament and the Hebrew language. Ultimately, the instruction the Bene Israel received from Protestant missionaries did not convert them to Christianity but strengthened and transformed their Judaism.

Human rights in Judaism and the Jewish legal tradition / Vorobyev, V ; Iliev, R   Journal Article
Vorobyev, V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract TODAY, when the number of countries that pay particular attention in their legislation to human rights and freedoms and their enforcement practice has considerably increased while the world is facing unprecedented challenges created by terrorist structures such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and the Al-Nusra Front (known in Russia as Jabhat al-Nusra), it has become clear that the mechanism of constitutional and legal protection of individual rights and freedoms has come to the fore. These challenges add tension to the fairly strained correlation between the need to protect the human rights and to ensure security.

Israel as the ‘hermeneutical Jew’ in Protestant statements on the land and State of Israel: four Presbyterian examples / Gregerman, Adam   Journal Article
Gregerman, Adam Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article studies four major Protestant Christian statements on the State of Israel, from the Presbyterian Church (USA) (1987, 2012) and the Church of Scotland (2003, 2013). While they initially advocate a secular, non-theologized view of Israel, they then paradoxically assess ‒ and often critique ‒ it using Scriptural texts and Christian theological concepts. These assessments are analysed using Jeremy Cohen’s model of the ‘hermeneutical Jew’, which describes a pre-modern Christian construction of the Jew as possessing Scripture but reading it incorrectly (e.g. too literally, particularistically). It is argued that the model applies to these modern Christian statements which view Israel as a hermeneutical Jew. They cast Israel as a corporate religious entity by which the Jewish people might fulfil their religious obligations, but criticize it for failing to properly interpret and apply Scripture in its policies. The article then critiques the appropriateness and accuracy of their viewing Israel as a hermeneutical Jew.

Israel in modern Jewish identity: an internal debate / Friesel, Evyatar   Journal Article
Friesel, Evyatar Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Contemporary Jewry is burdened by a fierce debate about Zionism and Israel. A sizeable sector of Jewish academics, where leftists and self-declared liberals are strongly represented, criticises the Jewish state to the point of casting doubts regarding its very existence. Although their argumentation is frequently similar to the utterances of non-Jewish antisemites, what moves these Jewish Israel-critics is not so much Jews and Judaism but rather the Zionist idea. Such anti-Israel Jews are influenced by modern ideological trends and pressures that affect also, strangely enough, certain Israeli Jewish intellectuals. These developments happen on the background of an increasing pattern of Jew-hatred in non-Jewish society, a transformation of past antisemitism now expressed as anti-Israelism.

Israel’s immigration policies and the promotion of genetic testing: empiricizing definitional criteria, bolstering state demographic security, or hastening the Messianic era? / Devir, Nathan P   Journal Article
Devir, Nathan P Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The aims of this study are to document a relevant array of perspectives on the use of genetic testing for the purposes of approving immigration to the state of Israel, and to consider the potential implications of such testing for the larger Jewish world. Further, this work analyzes the views of a number of prominent national figures — in the rabbinical, governmental, educational, and private sectors in Israel — on this subject. Finally, it provides a critical assessment of the varying contentious scenarios that may manifest themselves with regard to the claims of contested Jewish communities from the Global South whose genetic “evidence” is not as readily accessible as is that of Jews hailing from established centers of Jewish life.

Jewish and Israeli history in Turkish history textbooks, 1946–2016 / Tezcan, Selim   Journal Article
Tezcan, Selim Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article examines the treatment of Jewish and Israeli history in post-World War II Turkish textbooks. Jewish and Israeli history remains largely relegated to the margins in the books. The Jews of Arabia are shown in an antagonistic role during the advent of Islam, while the Jews of the Ottoman Empire are generally subsumed under the category of non-Muslims. The Ottoman reception of the Spanish (Sephardi) Jews is used to exemplify Turkish tolerance. The subject of the Jewish Holocaust is usually avoided. The older textbooks strike a more balanced approach towards Israel than the recent ones.

Jewish nation-state bill: is there a contradiction between Judaism and democracy? / Fishman , Joel   Article
Fishman , Joel Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract One of the reasons for the breakup of the Netanyahu government in December 2014 was a serious disagreement concerning the “Law of the Nation,” otherwise known as the Jewish Nation-State Bill. According to the prime minister’s fourteen principles for the drafting of the government bill, the purpose of this legislation was “defining the identity of the State of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people and anchoring the values of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state in the spirit of the principles contained in the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel.” On November 19, 2014, the government approved this text as a starting-point for the Netanyahu-Weinstein version of the bill.
