Best option for India is to bank on the ANA / Bansal, Alok   Journal Article
Bansal, Alok Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Many analysts perceive that India should evolve a joint strategy with the Central Asian States to counter both the Taliban and Pakistani influence in Kabul. However, this has the grave disadvantage of being perceived as anti-Pakhtoon in Afghanistan's fractured ethnic mosaic. Similarly, any coalition with Iran is likely to be perceived as anti-Sunni by the dominant sect in Afghanistan. In addition, considering the current state of US-Iran relations, any relationship with Iran has a risk of running afoul of the USA. The best option for India is to bank on the ANA and pro-India politicians in Afghanistan. India must not allow it to be side-lined on Afghanistan as was done in the Turkey and London Conferences. There are many Afghan politicians who are willing to do India's bidding.

Factors leading to insurgency in Balochistan / Bansal, Alok   Journal Article
Bansal, Alok Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract Balochistan has been in the midst of a full fledged insurgency for over five years now. Pakistani establishment has tried to project the current insurgency as a tribal mischief being perpetrated by a few feudal lords but the widespread support that the insurgents have been enjoying and the impunity with which they have been targeting symbols of government authority not only across the entire length and breadth of Balochistan but even outside, indicate that there are deep rooted, well defined causes that have led to this insurgency. The paper attempts to analyse the factors that have led to current round of insurgency in Balochistan.

Gilgit-Baltistan: the roots of political alienation / Bansal, Alok   Journal Article
Bansal, Alok Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir has witnessed a series of political disturbances and violence over the past years. Though many analysts have viewed the often-violent assertions by otherwise peaceful residents of this remote and mountainous region as occasional eruptions of the Shia-Sunni sectarian divide, a careful examination will indicate the deeper roots of alienation of the population in this long-neglected region. Almost total absence of democratic rights, lack of participation in the government and economic exploitation of the region coupled with ethnic, cultural and linguistic marginalisation appear to be the main factors that have led to this alienation.

Iran: its strategic importance / Bansal, Alok   Journal Article
Bansal, Alok Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract One of the most difficult tasks facing the foreign policy makers in India is the requirement to balance the relations with Iran while enhancing proximity with the United States. This invariably raises questions over the importance of Iran. An ancient civilisation, Iran is located at the crucial junction of South Asia and the Middle East. It also links the Central Asian Republics and the Caucasus region to the Arabian Sea. Historically, it has influenced its neighbours, irrespective of the type of government in power. One of the oldest continuously inhabited civilisations, it forms a bridge between the Semitic world and the Indo-Aryan civilisation of South Asia and has had strong historical linkages with India. This article looks at the strategic importance of Iran for India.
