Between amity, enmity and Europeanisation: EU energy security policy and the example of Bulgaria's Russian energy dependence / Maltby, Tomas   Article
Maltby, Tomas Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Considering the development of the Bulgarian energy security strategy this article analyses how the country has adapted to EU membership and to energy security challenges, such as disruptions to Russian gas supplies in 2006 and 2009 and rising gas prices. Utilising a conceptual lens which synthesises Regional Security Complex Theory and Europeanisation, the article offers an explanation of energy policy changes. It concludes that conceptions of Russia as an energy security guarantor have changed since Bulgaria's EU accession and that Bulgarian energy policy has undergone a qualified reorientation away from a positive dependence on Russian energy sources, towards a convergence with EU priorities of diversification and a single energy market.

Can CSR reduce stock price crash risk? evidence from China's energy industry / Wu, Chia-Ming   Journal Article
Wu, Chia-Ming Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This study explores the effect of CSR on reducing a firm's stock price crash risk in China's energy industry by using a regression model and further investigates the effect of items within CSR (e.g., corporate governance and environment protection) on reducing said risk to find which item is important for CSR for the energy industry. Covering a total of 100 energy firms including electricity generation and mining from 2014 to 2016, this study observes that CSR significantly affects stock price crash risk in the energy industry, as employee protection, environmental protection, product quality control, consumers’ right protection, and supply chain partners all significantly reduce an energy firm's stock price crash risk. We also employ the industry as our moderator to test whether different sub-industries have varying correlations between CSR and stock price crash risk, finding that the electricity generation firms with higher CSR scores especially in environmental protection, promoting technology innovation, and corporate image have significantly lower stock price crash risk, while the mining firms do not. These results suggest that compared to other CSR items, investors should pay more attention on pollution improvement and trading provisions that decrease this risk more effectively, especially in the electricity generation industry.

Oil fuels Guyana’s internecine conflict / Bulkan, Arif; Trotz, Alissa   Journal Article
Bulkan, Arif Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This essay situates Guyana’s recent election standoff in a longer, relatively unbroken trajectory of racially divisive politics. It explores how historically oppressed peoples have directed their hostility at each other while governments have worked with extractive industries to perpetuate a neo-imperial economidepenc structure. The recent discovery of major offshore oil deposits has started a new cycle of this economic dency on commodity exports and multinational corporations while raising the stakes of racialized domestic political competition.

Russian natural gas and global energy / Medvedev, A   Journal Article
Medvedev, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract EVERY DISCUSSION on how Russian natural gas contributes to the development of the global energy sector inevitably brings up the question of the role of natural gas in our day and age troubled by global climate change prospects. It might be interesting to reflect on how discussions and policies concerning the cutting of carbon emission may affect our business and what our response to it should be in strategic terms. I would underscore first of all that we at Gazprom, very much hoped that the Copenhagen climate change summit in December 2009 could conclude a treaty on a global climate change policy to further cut carbon emissions around the world. I am positive that this is essential for cushioning probable substantial impacts of climate change on human life.
