Summary/Abstract |
The signing of the proposed bilateral security agreement between the US led coalition and the Afghan government is nowhere near sight, even though the declared deadline for the complete withdrawal of coalition-led forces by the end of 2014 is drawing closer everyday. This has led to a feeling of growing pessimism amongst the general public as well as those at the helm of public affairs; there is ample historic evidence to support this phenomenon. It took barely a few years for the South Vietnamese regime to fall into the hands of the North Vietnamese after the departure of US troops and drawing up on financial support, the fall of Dr. Najibullah's pro- Soviet Kabul regime to the Taliban was no different a story. While the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was successfully thwarted when Soviet troops withdrew a decade later by an alliance whose three main partners were Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the United States, it was the latter's unceremonious and almost sudden withdrawal from this theatre of war, which sent this region into a socio-political mayhem, which continues to date with no immediate end in sight.

Summary/Abstract |
One of the most difficult tasks facing the foreign policy makers in India is the requirement to balance the relations with Iran while enhancing proximity with the United States. This invariably raises questions over the importance of Iran. An ancient civilisation, Iran is located at the crucial junction of South Asia and the Middle East. It also links the Central Asian Republics and the Caucasus region to the Arabian Sea. Historically, it has influenced its neighbours, irrespective of the type of government in power. One of the oldest continuously inhabited civilisations, it forms a bridge between the Semitic world and the Indo-Aryan civilisation of South Asia and has had strong historical linkages with India. This article looks at the strategic importance of Iran for India.

Summary/Abstract |
The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) provides a great platform for China and Pakistan to promote regional trade activity. The massive infrastructure project to improve maritime and road connectivity is viewed as being a “game-changer” for Pakistan’s economy. However, the CPEC project at its core is envisaged as the link between China’s ambitious “One Belt and One Road” project and the “Maritime Silk Route” project. There is plausibility in the argument that connectivity projects, naval cooperation and the deepening bilateral relationship with the littorals of the Indian Ocean, particularly Pakistan, would certainly increase China’s maritime influence in the region. In view of the above, the paper will analyse how the China–Pakistan naval cooperation will upset the regional balance and intensify the naval competition between India and China in the Arabian Sea.

Summary/Abstract |
Piracy in the Gulf of Aden, which first emerged as a serious threat in 2005, has since grown manifold, virtually doubling with each passing year between 2006 and 2009. In 2010, though, there was a slight dip in the number of attacks by the Somali pirates the range of piracy attacks has increased significantly. The response of the global community has been remarkably swift. The UN resolution 1816 of 2008 which first authorised nations to deploy warships for counter-piracy operations in Somali territorial waters has since been followed by several international initiatives. Currently over two dozen warships are deployed in the region on anti piracy patrols. Yet, attacks by Somali pirates continue unabated. This paper seeks to highlight the key challenges faced by naval patrols in the Gulf of Aden and brings out the various options that exist for the global shipping industry.
