Declining fertility rates in Japna: an ageing crisis ahead / Lam, Peng Er   Journal Article
Lam, Peng Er Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract The two key impediments to addressing the ageing crisis of Japan are: electoral politics which avoid making hard decisions painful to voters (especially the hiking of the consumption tax), and even more insidious, the norms of Japanese corporations and patriarchal society which discourage women from marrying and producing babies while holding onto a career and aspirations of their own. If Japan's ageing problem were to persist in the long run, then a concomitant decline in its manufacturing capacity (which underpins its export-dependent economy) and a diminution of its political weight in its international affairs can be anticipated.

Japan’s quest for soft power / Lam, Peng Er   Journal Article
Lam, Peng Er Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2007.
Summary/Abstract Japan is seeking to project its "soft power" through the allure of manga and anime in its public diplomacy. The production, diffusion and global consumption of manga and anime are driven by market forces and consumer tastes and not by the Japanese state. However, the latter is seeking to harness this popular culture to burnish Tokyo's international image. Despite the attractiveness of Japanese pop culture and other more traditional forms of public diplomacy, Tokyo's pursuit of "soft power" and a good international image is undermined by its failure to overcome its burden of history

Summary/Abstract In 2019, Singapore celebrated its bicentennial and reflected on its journey from a British colony engaged in entrepôt trade to a successful sovereign state anchored in ASEAN. The ruling party announced that Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat will be Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s successor. Presumably, Heng will play a key leadership role for his party in Singapore’s upcoming general election.
