Eternal collapse of Russia / Starobin, Paul   Journal Article
Starobin, Paul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Despite centuries of dire predictions, Russia isn't going anywhere. RUSSIA, IT IS often said, is a country that is barely able to stumble out of bed and put on matching socks in the morning. In the lead-up to the Winter Olympics in Sochi and continuing during the Games, the U.S. media declared open season on the nation. Americans were told that Russia is a country just about bereft of functioning elevators or toilets. Or even a national food, "except perhaps bad sushi." Its people "hardly know who they are anymore" and its essence is defined by copyright infringement and "all-encompassing corruption." All in all, Russia is "a country that's falling apart," as a New Republic cover story in February put it.

New trends in Taiwan's China policy / Hughes, Christopher R   Journal Article
Hughes, Christopher R Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Elections for a new parliament and president in Taiwan last year have led to a relaxation in the relationship with China that had become increasingly tense under the previous administration in Taipei. Having come to power on a platform of economic revival, the newly elected president, Ma Ying-jeou, now has to win over a wary public to support his policy of deeper engagement with China. This is becoming increasingly difficult as the economic downturn on both sides of the Taiwan Strait has made it hard to deliver the expected material benefits and the island slides into a severe recession. Meanwhile, Ma faces a growing dilemma as he waits for Beijing to deliver concessions on allowing the island more international space. If this is not forthcoming, domestic politics could force him back towards the more assertive foreign policy developed by his predecessors.
