Haredi media, religious identity, and the COVID 19 crisis / Cohen, Yoel; Adini, Bruria; Spitz, Ahuva   Journal Article
Cohen, Yoel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Israel in March 2020 and the government imposed a number of lockdowns, Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) rabbis instructed their followers to continue attending synagogues and engage in Torah study. As a result, the relative number of COVID-19 infections and fatalities in the Haredi community was higher than that of the Israeli population as a whole. This article examines the role of the mass media during the crisis in Israel’s largest Haredi city of Bnei Beraq, via interviews with 405 of the city’s residents. It shows that despite rabbinic bans on exposure to the secular media and to the Internet, many Haredim were exposed to them and hence less dependent on the Haredi media.

Israeli Haredi media and the ‘female factor: the case of the Kol Barama radio station / Cohen, Yoel   Journal Article
Cohen, Yoel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In 2018 the Jerusalem District Court fined the Haredi Kol Barama radio station 1 million shekels ($280,000) for excluding women from the airwaves, stirring outrage within the Haredi community, highly sensitive to appearances of women in public contexts, which had created the station to provide radio broadcasts for its constituents, whose needs were not met by mainstream radio stations. The affair thus serves as a cardinal test of the level of freedom of a radio station, the interests of minority religious audiences, and the powers and responsibilities of the supervising public broadcasting authority.

Vanunu, The Sunday Times, and the Dimona question / Cohen, Yoel   Journal Article
Cohen, Yoel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract On 5 October 1986 The Sunday Times published an expose about Israel's secret programme at its nuclear reactor in Dimona. Entitled 'Revealed: Israel's Nuclear Secrets', the expose drew upon data received from Mordechai Vanunu who worked at the reactor for seven years as a technician. The newspaper calculated that Israel possessed 100-200 nuclear warheads. The expose also claimed that Israel was developing a thermonuclear and neutron nuclear capability. The expose was a watershed in Israeli public and foreign governmental perceptions about the country's nuclear programme. While the expose resulted in a revision of international estimates about Israel's nuclear capability, some questioned The Sunday Times' estimates. The disclosure failed to bring about the collapse of the country's ambiguity policy. Reflecting the seriousness of the security leak, Vanunu was abducted back to Israel from Europe by the Mossad and sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment on charges of espionage and treason. This article examines how The Sunday Times investigated Vanunu's account, the impact of the expose abroad and inside Israel, and analyses the behaviour of the newspaper after Vanunu's abduction.
