Summary/Abstract |
Although many analysts on the European continent use the term Anglo-Saxon to refer to a presumed close political association between Britain and the United States, the fact is that for more than a century the two countries competed for global influence. In fact, for well more than a century beginning at least early in the 19th century the United States regularly challenged Britain's global role - eventually replacing Britain as the dominant global power. In this competition, the United States adopted a brutally realist 'power politics' approach to Britain, while the latter focused on the challenge from another global contender, Germany. Today, when Britain's future role clearly lies with the European Union (EU) and the United States has entered upon a period of decline, Britain's role, and that of the EU, is to help the United States to move on so that it does not threaten values that are dear to Europe. Britain can play a role in this if it is acceptable, both within the framework of the EU and to the United States.

Summary/Abstract |
A speculative analysis of disturbing trends evident now, which will require attention from decision-makers in twenty-five years time, identifies a number of problems with structural implications. Assets for broaching these problems are analyzed leading to an assessment of the requirements for global leadership. A comparison between the situation in 2010 and 2035 demonstrates the necessity for and likelihood of change. Options range from global suicide to a consortium of rising and declining great powers. The outcome will need to reflect forces rising bottom-up in global society. Examples of the strengths and weaknesses of India's contribution are given.

Summary/Abstract |
This article assesses the effective meaning, scope and implications of intra-Community solidarity in the security and defence area. It touches on the genealogy of the conception of solidarity and its various interpretations as well as both the tensions this entails and impediments this creates for development of a common security and defence policy. It concludes that political solidarity has been gradually taking root on the basis of a common shared modus vivendi, although not without embarrassing setbacks. Military solidarity is more than a mirage but not yet a firmly based reality given the existence in the European Union of distinct foreign and security policy identities shaped by traditionally defined national interests that still dominate intergovernmental cooperation in the area.
