1917–2017: the geopolitical legacy of the Russian revolution / Bassin, Mark; Richardson, Paul ; Kolosov, Vladimir ; Clowes, Edith W   Journal Article
Bassin, Mark Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The essays collected in this forum discuss the geopolitical legacy of the Russian Revolution of 1917, one of the most momentous political events of the twentieth century. From a range of different academic disciplines and perspectives, the authors consider how the profound transformations in society and politics were refracted through space and geography, and how enduring these refractions proved to be. The authors focus on three themes that have been dominant in Russian affairs over the past century: 1)the problem of center-periphery relations, 2)the civilizational dynamics of Russia’s self-identification in relation to Europe and to Asia, and 3)the geopolitics of national identity.

1941 and the National-Patriotic Revival in Russia / Sutton, David   Journal Article
Sutton, David Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Hitler’s invasion of the USSR has long been a source of historiographical controversy. In the West, the version of events pushed by former German commanders, which emphasized Hitler’s mistakes, the weather, and brutal Soviet profligacy, became the dominant Cold War explanation for Hitler’s failure to take Moscow. This explanation no longer finds many adherents among Western historians. The official Soviet explanation emphasized the treacherous German attack, heroic resistance by the Red Army, and the solidarity of the Soviet government and people. During glasnost’, a ‘revisionist’ critique of the Soviet view fervently attacked once-sacred shibboleths surrounding the prosecution of the war. This article explores the evolving anti-revisionist ‘national-patriotic’ version of 1941 that has become the new dominant paradigm in Russia.

Summary/Abstract THE UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE in Copenhagen on 7-19 December came close to collapse and ended in "taking note of" an extremely contradictory document passed in the dying hours of the conference the Copenhagen Accord whose future remains uncertain. The climate forum in Copenhagen demonstrated yet again that we are still at the very start of a long and thorny path toward developing a universal, comprehensive, fair and efficient strategy of the world community for combating climate change.

Summary/Abstract CELEBRATIONS took place in August 2013 in the Czech Republic and Russia to mark 200 years since the victory in the Battle of Kulm by the allied forces of Russia, Austria and Prussia over Napoleon's forces. In order to put in perspective this seemingly local and almost forgotten battle in 1813, where valiant Russian soldiers played a decisive part, let us make a brief historical digression to the now distant period that preceded the fighting at Kulm on 29-30 August 1813 and at Leipzig on October 16-18, 1813.

25 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and Croatia / Azintov, A   Journal Article
Azintov, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORY of the Russian policy with regard to South Slavic peoples generally boils down to considering Russian-Serbian relations, often unjustifiably leaving out the Slovenians, Croats, Macedonians and others. However, all these peoples have also strived to establish close relations with us and use Russian authority and influence in the struggle for the interests of their own, including, admittedly, in conflicts with each other. For many centuries, Russia has been developing contacts with these peoples, and their cultures kept intertwining.

Aida IPATOVA Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract May 2019 marked 400 years of relations between Russia and China, two major powers belonging to different world civilizations. It was a long way from knowing or understanding absolutely nothing about each other, through conflicts, including armed clashes, to realizing that a peaceful dialogue based on mutual understanding and reciprocal concessions was the right choice. The first step in this direction was taken by Russia as it sent, in 1618-1619, Ivan Petlin's mission to China where it was welcomed at the diplomatic level.
