Cypriot-led, Cypriot-owned: Cyprus talks revisited / Michael, Michális S   Journal Article
Michael, Michális S Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Cyprus occupies an unenviable position among a group of intractable international conflicts which transcend their national borders and whose resolution has eluded third-party mediation. The Cyprus dispute has preoccupied theorists and practitioners of conflict resolution ever since the United Nations stationed its peacekeeping force on the island in 1964. Even attempts by the United Nations to revitalise the Cyprus talks following the 2004 referendum on the Annan plan have not yielded satisfactory results. For decades, the Cyprus problem has challenged conventional international analysis and defied traditional approaches to negotiation and peacemaking. This article grapples with the question of why this conflict has not been resolved despite endless negotiations. By extrapolating three seemingly distinct variables-Cypriotisation, Europeanisation and post-Kemalism-this article alludes to changes in the conflict's contextual parameters that are conducive to a political settlement.

Cyprus conflict: a decades-old European problem still pending resolution / Sophocli, Sophoclis   Article
Sophocli, Sophoclis Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract As a sovereign state Cyprus has become a member of the UN (1960), of its specialized agencies and a number of various other international and regional organizations, and on May 1, 2004 the country joined the European Union as a full member. The Zurich-London Agreements laid the groundwork for the signing of three treaties, namely, the Treaty Concerning the Establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, the Treaty of Guarantee and the Treaty of Alliance. The Zurich-London Agreements have also provided a legal framework for drafting the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus.

Cyprus Conflict: root causes and implications for peacebuilding / Hadjipavlou, Maria   Journal Article
Hadjipavlou, Maria Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2007.
Summary/Abstract survey in 2000-02 in both the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities examines the beliefs about the root causes of the Cyprus conflict, the political culture, social attitudes, and future solutions. This article shows that both external and internal factors, both psychological and contextual, have played an influential role in the creation and perpetuation of the conflict - a view that challenges the selective official positions that define the problem as either a problem of external factors or merely an internal discord between the majority and minority population. The article highlights the complexity that characterizes intractable conflicts. It promotes the view that internal, contextual, and psychological factors are equally significant, as are legal and political factors, to be taken into account when addressing peacebuilding and future solutions. Some generalizations will be made with regard to the value of micro-level (i.e. societal studies) research in the field of conflict resolution and political psychology

European Union: what role in the Cyprus conflict? / Christou, George   Journal Article
Christou, George Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract With the belief that the EU would act as a catalyst in the period prior to the accession of the (Greek) Cypriot government to the European club on 1 May 2004 having ended in disappointment, this article looks at the more complex internal/external dynamics now at play in the current milieu. A key question raised is the extent to which the EU can effectively prevent the potential short-term negative effects emerging as a result of the its failure to realise its objectives for the north, from crystallising into further developments that could make reunification of the island impossible. To do this, it will have to exploit the opportunities that exist to facilitate movement towards reunification, a difficult but not impossible task if the EU takes into account the demands of all actors involved.

European Union, borders and conflict transformation: the case of Cyprus / Christou George   Journal Article
Christou George Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Much of the existing literature on the European Union (EU), conflict transformation and border dynamics has been premised on the assumption that the nature of the border determines EU intervention and the consequences that flow from this in terms of EU impact. The article aims to transcend this literature through assessing how domestic interpretations influence EU border transformation in conflict situations, taking Cyprus as a case study. Moreover, the objective is to fuse the literature on EU bordering impact and perceptions of the EU's normative projection in conflict resolution. Pursuing this line of inquiry is an attempt to depart from the notion of borders being constructed solely by unidirectional EU logics of engagement or bordering practices to a conceptualization of the border as co-constituted space, where the interpretations of the EU's normative projections by conflict parties, and the strategies that they pursue, can determine the relative openness of the EU border.
