1325, Peace, and Security in the Shadow of COVID-19 / Zayyad, Ziad Abu   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract While the year 2020 was heading toward its end, we at the Palestine-Israel Journal were heading toward closing our last issue for this year, which is devoted to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. With wonderful, outstanding women from academia and the public sector, we believe we have produced an excellent issue. We believe that it will serve as an impressive resource on this resolution not only for Palestine and Israel but the whole world. Because of the global importance of the subject, we were careful to include a wide spectrum of contributions from the region and abroad. This issue was made possible by the generous support of the Foreign Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany, and for that we express our gratitude and thanks. This is not the first time that we have collaborated with the German government, and we hope it will not be the last.

Future Scenarios – Where Do We Go from Here? / Zayyad, Ziad Abu; Schenker, Hillel   Journal Article
Zayyad, Ziad Abu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract These are difficult days, both with the war in Europe upsetting the whole international order and tense times in Israel-Palestine. There has been a rise in the number of Palestinians killed by the Israel Police and Border Police, some of them after they were wounded and lay on the ground. In most of the cases, the official Israeli announcement claimed that they were “neutralized” after stabbing attempts. Seven Palestinians were killed in February and 18 in March, including children, one of whom was only 14 years old, and two 80-year-old. On the Israeli side, 11 people were killed in late March in three armed attacks on civilian targets within one week — two of them by Palestinian Israelis associated with the Islamic State (ISIS) and one by a Palestinian from Ya’bad in the Jenin district — and three more civilians were killed 10 days later on Dizengoff Street in the heart of Tel Aviv.

Jerusalem–alternatives to discrimination and confrontation / Zayyad, Ziad Abu   Journal Article
Zayyad, Ziad Abu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Jerusalem is a most striking example of the current deterioration in the relations between Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab/Islamic world. The recent escalation of Israeli activities aimed at converting Jerusalem into a totally Jewish city has had no precedent since the occupation of East Jerusalem began in 1967. These activities will not change the reality that Jerusalem, which the Jews claim only for themselves, is at the heart of the Christian and Muslim faiths.

President Trump's decision on Jerusalem lacks international legitimacy and strategic vision / Zayyad, Ziad Abu   Journal Article
Zayyad, Ziad Abu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract At the last moment when this issue was ready to go to the printer, U.S. President Donald Trump came out with his statement officially recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and instructing the U.S. State Department to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The statement will have a far-reaching impact on efforts to achieve a political settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and therefore requires a clear, immediate response before it’s too late. President Trump’s decision lacks any international legitimacy or legal justification.

Recipe for Permanent, Perpetual Conflict / Zayyad, Ziad Abu   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract Regardless of public statements by some Palestinian leaders designed for local consumption, I want to emphasize that I have never heard a Palestinian leader who believes in the possibility of achieving a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict without the United States. On the contrary, as a former negotiator and minster who worked closely with Palestinian Authority (PA) President Yasser Arafat and his associates at a crucial phase of the negotiations and efforts to seek a political solution to the conflict, I can confidently say that we all believed that nothing could move forward without the involvement of the U.S.
