Domestic dynamics of Turkey's Cyprus policy: implications for Turkey's accession to the European Union / Kinacioglu, Muge; Oktay, Emel   Journal Article
Kinacioglu, Muge Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract This essay examines the interplay between the domestic dynamics of Turkish foreign policy regarding Cyprus by identifying the main themes formulated by Erdo?an's JDP government and its implications for Turkey's EU membership. It argues that considering the Cyprus issue-once regarded a major obstacle for Turkey's EU bid-as no longer constituting a problem for Turkey's membership has been shortsighted. It concludes that JDP's policy has gradually made the Cyprus issue a precondition for the opening and success of the accession talks, which would in turn be counterproductive with respect to Turkey's EU membership in the medium to long term.

Hizballah of Turkey: a pseudo-threat to the secular order? / Atalar, M Kursad   Journal Article
Atalar, M Kursad Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract This article covers the origins, features and ideological characteristics of the most militant Islamic organization in Turkey and shows that its threat to the existing order has been exaggerated. To do so it uses four analytical terms: politics, modernism, tradition and strategy. In addition to organizational shortcomings, the analytical survey demonstrated that Hizballah of Turkey can only be regarded as the "immediate" or "actual" threat, but not a "real" one. As a matter of fact, it has perished recently with emergency actions taken by security forces.

Human rights and Turkey's bid for EU membership: will "Fundamental Rights of the Union" bring fundamental changes to the Turkish Constitution and the Turkish politics? / Dogan, Nejat   Journal Article
Dogan, Nejat Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract This paper compares and contrasts human rights provisions of the Turkish Constitution with those of the Charter of the Fundamental Rights, incorporated in the draft European Constitution as Part II. It critiques the Turkish Constitution and assesses the convergence of its approach with the European Union's human rights regime on the critical issues of dignity, freedoms, equality, solidarity, civil rights, and justice. While changes are required in Turkey's constitution to bring it into line, the main changes required are the full implementation in practice of rights promised in the legal texts.

Kemalism in the era of totalitarianism: a conceptual analysis / Mateescu, Dragos C   Journal Article
Mateescu, Dragos C Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract The resurgence of interest in the concept of political religions and its various ideological and institutional facets gained a significant impetus with Emilio Gentile's contribution to the field. However, Gentile's conceptual construction has not yet been applied specifically to the study of Kemalism as the predominant doctrine of Turkey's transformation from an empire into a nation?state. This essay is based on the assumption that such an approach is possible and evaluates theoretically the applicability of Gentile's definitions of political religions and totalitarianism within the Turkish context of change as shaped under the principles of Kemalism in the first part of the 20th century.

Perceptions of ant-semitism among Turkish Jews / Toktas, Sule   Journal Article
Toktas, Sule Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract It is commonly believed that there is little or no anti?Semitism in Turkey. For this reason, the Turkish Jewish community is considered to be fortunate. The 1942 Capital Tax, the September 6-7 Events in 1955, and even the Thrace Incidents of 1934, in which the Jews were the main targets of violence, are considered to be examples of discrimination against all non?Muslim minorities in Turkey. This study investigates the validity of this optimistic view with the help of empirical research conducted on a sample group of Turkish Jews. More precisely, it deals with the question of how Jews living in Turkey perceive anti?Semitism with a perspective that prioritizes the voices of the Jews themselves and gives an account of their experience regarding their status as a religious minority in a Muslim majority society. This paper discusses the results of the research based on in?depth interviews with Jewish respondents and reflects on the nature, sources, and extent of anti?Semitism in contemporary Turkey in the eyes of Turkey's Jews themselves.

Turkey and the European Union: the simple complexity / Kutuk, Zeki   Journal Article
Kutuk, Zeki Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract This article analyzes the simple complexity of Turkey's EU membership issue, the burden of history, and the role of Greece. Obviously, on the one hand, the hostile past between Europe and Turkey may still reflect negatively throughout Turkey's integration process as some circles want to see the EU as a Christian club and, therefore, want to exclude it from the EU enlargement. Turkey's EU candidacy has become possible only after these circles have begun to lose their dominant power in the EU. Further, notwithstanding the positive role of Greece, Turkey must endeavor to resolve the outstanding problems, including Cyprus, that it has with Greece. As a means of overcoming these two obstacles, Turkey must improve its image as a democratic state worthy of participating fully in the European integration process.
