Domestic dynamics of Turkey's Cyprus policy: implications for Turkey's accession to the European Union / Kinacioglu, Muge; Oktay, Emel   Journal Article
Kinacioglu, Muge Journal Article

Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract This essay examines the interplay between the domestic dynamics of Turkish foreign policy regarding Cyprus by identifying the main themes formulated by Erdo?an's JDP government and its implications for Turkey's EU membership. It argues that considering the Cyprus issue-once regarded a major obstacle for Turkey's EU bid-as no longer constituting a problem for Turkey's membership has been shortsighted. It concludes that JDP's policy has gradually made the Cyprus issue a precondition for the opening and success of the accession talks, which would in turn be counterproductive with respect to Turkey's EU membership in the medium to long term.

Turkey`s contribution to NATO role in post-cold war security go: the use of force and security identity formation / Kinacioglu, Muge; Gurzel, Aylin G   Journal Article
Kinacioglu, Muge Journal Article

Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract After the Cold War, NATO formulated its role new role on the basis of broader political aims and new security objective by assuming crisis management operations beyond its borders. This article argues from a constructivist perspective that keen Turkish involvement in NATO out of area operations constitutes a context of social interaction that has led to particular identities and certain security policy outputs for both. Turkey`s participation in NATO`s military operations as the sole Muslim ally, in the post-cold war era, enabled NATO to build an identity as a global security actor in crisis management while turkey`s active role in these operations served to keep Turkey`s sense of prominence in the protection of the universal values and, thus, its claim to western identity.
