Summary/Abstract |
This study shines light on behind-the-scenes informal economic activities in the Thailand-Myanmar borderland, with a focus on unauthorized riverbank Burmese merchants, the cross-border movement of goods, and the nexus of ethnic politics and border trade. issue_image_88_4_ Border Trade by Boat_LeeAlthough unauthorized trade is labeled as “smuggling” by the state, it is withi chiwit, a “way of life,” for Burmese merchants on the riverbank and even recognized by local state agencies. The decision to smuggle is made rationally and deliberately by the merchants as part of their life trajectories, while smuggled goods cater to the needs of local people and are deeply integrated into the economy of the border towns. The cross-border movement of goods by boat also demonstrates that informal ways are still alive and facilitating border trade. It further shows that the ordering of the border is not entirely regulated by state agencies but by other social groups as well, notably ethnic groups.

Summary/Abstract |
Border trade perhaps is the answer - only if we realize that there is a larger moral economy of border trade the gains of which far outweigh its meagre economic returns. Doesn't the moral economy of border trade force us to revisit both the dominant discourses of national security and functional integration and see how they mutate and transform under present conditions?

Summary/Abstract |
Since the 1990s, the Government of India has undertaken several policy initiatives to facilitate cross-border flows. Such initiatives can be read as an effort to transform ‘battlefields into marketplaces’. This paper examines the rise of the border town of Champhai, located on the India-Myanmar border in the state of Mizoram in Northeast India. The formation of a new urban centre in a frontier region based on border trade reveals different dimensions of transition in Northeast India’s borderlands. The paper explores two key themes: how border trade, comprised of legal and illegal flows, has transformed Champhai into Mizoram’s third-largest city, and how increasing trade across the border reorients the interethnic dynamics with strong implications for ethnic and citizenship politics in Mizoram. The paper concludes by highlighting the different aspects discussed in the article that would determine the borderland dynamics in Mizoram.

Summary/Abstract |
Entering the 21st century, trade relations between Vietnam and China have grown strongly, making
positive contributions to the economic development of the two countries. However, the relationship in
the period 2000–15 also witnessed a number of thorny issues such as a serious trade imbalance against
Vietnam, the ‘North to South’ nature in the import and export structure of the two countries, Vietnam’s
growing dependence on bilateral trade with China, and so on. These issues have affected negatively
Vietnam’s economy. Based on data analysis, the author identifies the key characteristics of trade relations
between Vietnam and China and highlights possible solutions for Vietnam to move its trade relations
with China in a more balanced direction.

Summary/Abstract |
North Korea remains a place of obscurity, mystery and even of imminent threat in popular imagination of East Asia and America. In this article, we explore existing representations of and discourses around North Korea and argue for a different framework to consider how North Korea is a critical participant in the contemporary world. Drawing on our respective fieldwork in Dandong, China, throughout 2006 to 2014, the article suggests a new way of thinking about issues surrounding North Korea.
