Does China's trade expansion help African development? — an empirical estimation / Yong He   Journal Article
Yong He Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper uses Comtrade panel data to assess the impacts of imports from China, in comparison with those from the United States and France, on Sub-Saharan African manufactured exports (as proxies of production performance). It is found that Chinese impacts are significantly positive in all sectors and in general Chinese impacts are stronger than those of the United States and France. A South-South trade theoretical framework is then explored to interpret this finding: When the absorptive capability of a poorly-developed country is quite limited and (or) a sizeable substitution effect of importing intermediate goods on this country's local production is present, it is better to import from a Southern country with a superior technology than from a Northern country with a very advanced technology. Therefore, my finding has provided evidence that China's increasing trade with Africa is helpful to African economic development.

Double-edged effects of the technology gap and technology spill: evidence from the Chinese industrial sector / Lai, Mingyong; Wang, Hua; Zhu, Shujin   Journal Article
Lai, Mingyong Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This paper proposes a new insight that the technology gap plays double-edged roles in the technology spillovers of foreign direct investment (FDI) through two channels, technology choice set and technology absorptive capability. Applying a multiple-threshold model, we examine the non-linear relationship between the technology gap and technology spillovers based on the provincial panel data of the Chinese industrial sector during 1993-2006. The empirical results support the hypothesis of two thresholds, which are 0.3071 and 0.5214 in terms of the technology gap respectively. The estimated thresholds indicate the sufficient absorptive capability is the premise for FDI technology spillovers. Moreover, it implies the marginal decrease of FDI technology spillover effects in the long run.

Technological factors and total factor productivity in China: evidence based on a panel threshold model / Huang, Junbing   Journal Article
Huang, Junbing Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This study investigates the effects of technological factors, including indigenous research and development (R&D) investments, technology spillovers coming from foreign direct investments, export, and import, on China's total factor productivity (TFP). Using provincial panel data of China, covering 30 provinces over the period 2000–2014, our results confirm that indigenous R&D investments play a leading role in promoting TFP. Linear analysis suggests that, except for export, the technology spillovers through openness are beneficial for TFP growth. However, a further discussion based on a panel threshold model suggests that the different behaviours of these technology spillovers are dependent on the technological absorptive capacity affecting factors, such as human capital and indigenous R&D investments. The human capital will strengthen the spillover effects of each technology spillover. However, R&D intensity initially tends to hamper their spillover effects. Once the R&D intensity exceeds a certain level, the negative spillover effect of export on TFP tends to be alleviated, and the positive spillover effect of foreign direct investment and import on TFP will increase.

Technology spillover effects in the context of the evolution of / Xia, Enjun; Liu, Xiaohui   Journal Article
Liu, Xiaohui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract This paper focuses on the relationship between technology spillovers in the context of the evolution of China's regional industrial structure. Based on a theoretical model, we have formally shown the impact of the evolution of the regional industrial structure and have also empirically tested technology spillovers for the period 1991-2007 in the context of the evolution of the regional industrial structure in China. The findings provide an important theoretical and practical basis for the government to formulate regional economic policies and industrial development strategies.

Technology spillovers, absorptive capacity and economic growth / Mingyong, Lai; Shuijun, Peng; Qun, Bao   Journal Article
Mingyong, Lai Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract By establishing an endogenous growth model with knowledge-driven R&D, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between international technology spillovers, the host country's absorptive capability and endogenous economic growth. The solution to the competitive equilibrium problem shows that long-run growth arises from improvements in absorptive capability and higher human capital stocks, while the relationships between openness, the technology gap and the steady-state growth rate are uncertain. Econometric estimates of China's economic growth are obtained using province level data covering the period 1996-2002. The estimates indicate that technology spillovers depend on the host country's human capital investment and degree of openness, and that FDI is a more significant spillover channel than imports.
