Carpenter, Ted Galen Journal Article

Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract The concept of nation building has a long pedigree in US foreign policy. It was an identifiable feature of Washington's dealings with the colonial empire it acquired in the Spanish-American War, especially with regard to the Philippines. The United States also conducted a nation-building mission lasting nearly two decades in Haiti-from 1915 to 1934.

Implications of the accession of Cyprus to the European Union f / Melakopides, Costas   Journal Article
Melakopides, Costas Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract Convoluted and controversial developments preceded the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union on 1 May 2004. They demonstrated anew that important foreign power centers were bent on deciding, on self-serving grounds, the very nature of Cyprus's postoccupation regime. Their main instrument was the Annan Plan, named after United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan, coupled with skillful propaganda and asphyxiating political, economic, and diplomatic pressures. While the plan's rejection by the Greek Cypriots on 24 April 2004 was their inalienable right, its exercise was followed by the orchestrated undermining of President Tassos Papadopoulos and further unconscionable pressures, tantamount to the "punishment" of the Republic of Cyprus.

0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract Creating an area of political stability and security in the Mediterranean has become one of the highest priorities of Italian and European Union foreign policy, at both the bilateral and multilateral levels. Particularly important in this connection is Italy's participation in the fight against international terrorism and in regional peace and stabilization processes. Also important are its significant military contributions to operations led by the United Nations and other multilateral organizations.

Middle East: unbearable status quo versus unpredictable changes / Kumaraswamy, P R   Journal Article
Kumaraswamy, P R Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract Of late, the Middle East, a region of considerable historical, political, economic, religious, cultural, and above all strategic importance, draws international attention primarily for all the wrong reasons. The birthplace of the world's three most prominent and widely followed monotheistic religions is increasingly becoming the worm of all forces of instability, violence, and even evil. Once heralded as the home of human civilization, it is now seen as the host of political illegitimacy, social intolerance, and religious militancy. Even those who benefit from the region are no longer able to escape from the harsher downsides of their associations with the Middle East. Each passing event merely accentuates and sharpens the debates over the internal crisis facing the region.

Pax Mediterraneo / Savir, Uri   Journal Article
Savir, Uri Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract As Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip unravels itself in front of the public, it is clear that this historic move may reignite the Road Map. President George W. Bush and his regional partners have high hopes of treading its muddy waters. But despite its "clear phases, timelines, target dates, and benchmarks aiming at progress through reciprocal steps by the two parties in the political, security, economic, humanitarian, and institution-building fields, under the auspices of the Quartet" intended to move it toward a settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, the Road Map lacks the appropriate foundations and environment to cultivate the seeds of peace so that they actually grow. A broader, more effective solution might entail creating a comprehensive culture of peaceful coexistence through communication on a regional basis-the Mediterranean region.

Turkey's policies toward Kurdistan-Iraq and Iraq: nationalism, capitalism, and state formation / Olson, Robert   Journal Article
Olson, Robert Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract In this essay I analyze Turkey's policies toward the development of nationalism, capitalism, and state formation in Kurdistan-Iraq and Iraq from the 30 January 2005 national assembly elections in Iraq to Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan's meeting with President George W. Bush on 8 June 2005. I also note the 30 January elections in the eighteen provinces (muhafaza) of Iraq and for the Kurdish parliament in the three provinces under the control of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) as well as a referendum among the Kurds in the Kurdish-controlled region on whether the Kurds should have an independent state or not.
