Blurring lines of law and society / Roy, Abhik Guha   Journal Article
Roy, Abhik Guha Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract In a global system in which economic liberalism reigns supreme, law can only become an instrument to facilitate trade, as the internationalisation of intellectual property rights shows. Abhik Guha Roy points out that the legal system is increasingly used in the service of dominant business interests at the expense of true social justice. Will this evolution of legal concepts lead to a worldwide revolt against the contemporary notion of law?.

Challenges of a globalised and unipolar world / Yurlov, Felix   Journal Article
Yurlov, Felix Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract The present unipolar world order imposes on almost all countries a 'liberal' imperialistic model of development, inspired by the American system. Yet, the effects of 'market fundamentalism' have been traumatic, and often disastrous for national societies, from Russia to Latin America and the predominant economies, including the US, are also suffering from them. A popular revolt against the supremacy of globalised capital is taking place and Felix N Yurlov points out that it is a manifestation of the everlasting quest for greater social justice and equity.

Pandit, G L Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract G l Pandit analyses the dramatic situation of Kashmir as an indigenous exiled observer and participant. He recalls the major but easily forgotten injustices done to the native inhabitants of the state, the Pandits who, after becoming a minority in the land of their ancestors are now the victims of terror and forced exodus. Since decades, as a result of this civil war fostered by foreign powers for strategic reasons, the social fabric and environmental balance of the formerly Edenic Kashmir Valley have been tragically disrupted.

Global strategies: a control perspective / Kirpalani, Manek; Gabrielsson, Mika   Journal Article
Kirpalani, Manek Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract What is new about globalisation? The growth of international marketing is looked at, and then Manek Kirpalani and Mika Gabrielsson turn to the main subject. The empire-building strategy of Ancient Rome, in comparison to the ongoing hegemony-building approach of the US highlights what multinational enterprises (MNE) should be doing to dominate markets. Such strategies emphasise the importance of global integration of worldwide activities and necessary market adaptations, but more importantly they introduce a third vector-control through size and power-that emerges as a requisite for successful global leadership.

Sharma, Betwa Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract The evolution of the European Union (EU) into a federal political super-state has come to a halt following the rejection of a constitution by two of its founding states. The reasons for the popular discontent are complex. As Adil Hasan Khan and Betwa Sharma recall, it is clear that most citizens of member countries want the Union to ensure economic prosperity and stability but are suspicious of the supranational EU hierarchy's political ambitions and are desirous of keeping their respective sovereignties.

0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)

Summary/Abstract The Greater Middle East Initiative (GMEI) is a new project adopted by the US government to protect its interests and increase its influence in a troubled region where anti-American feelings are running high. With the rationale of fighting terrorism and instoring democracy, the American leadership seeks to lift remaining barriers to Anglo-Saxon economic hegemony and shape more compliant regimes in strategically important countries. As Eddie J Girdner states, this project is in line with Woodrow Wilson's agenda to extend US influence worldwide.

War on Iraq: business by other means / Bhagwat, Niloufer   Journal Article
Bhagwat, Niloufer Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract The ongoing war in Iraq is a defining example of a military campaign waged on behalf of major private business interests bent on plundering a country. It was launched on and is still being justified by false pretences and trumped-up charges. All the techniques of covert warfare perfected by the US forces (use of banned weapons, illegal arrests, secret detentions, torture, terrorist 'black ops' and other war crimes) are being applied in Iraq, in utter and open contempt of international law. Niloufer Bhagwat presents the indictment she wrote for the World Tribunal on Iraq and argues that a Nuremberg-style trial for the leaders of the aggressor-states is in order.
