Cheonan epilogue: prelude to the Sino-US incompatibility on the South China Sea dispute / Nalwa, Preeti   Journal Article
Nalwa, Preeti Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract The 'Cheonan' incident has prodded and expedited the strategic comeback of the US in East Asia. The US offer to mediate the territorial disputes over islands and seabed minerals in the South China Sea at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) meeting in July 2010 has provoked harsh criticism from the Chinese. This US diplomatic move appears to be a premeditated one to substantially diminish the influence of China in the region, to re-secure its own strategic forward military presence and to signal that it is not yet time for China to acquire absolute control over this critical waterway. The episode has rendered their mercurial relationship more problematic and makes the G-2 paradigm a fallacy.

Interdependence between China and the United States: a two-leve / Chunlong Lu; Xia, Min   Journal Article
Chunlong Lu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract This paper constructs a two-level model to explain China-U.S. relations. We find that at the state level, the interdependence between China and the United States, which comes from their bilateral trade and foreign direct investment, is asymmetric. Such asymmetric interdependence favors the United States in pushing the Chinese government to make concessions when they have conflicts. However, at the society level, China can penetrate into American society to intervene or influence American foreign policymaking. In this paper, it is argued that the outcome of China-U.S. relations is determined not only by the asymmetric interdependence at the state level or societal penetration respectively, but also by the interaction of these two factors in the process. Finally, the new development of China-U.S. relations since the inauguration of the Obama administration is also examined.

Taiwan's 2008 Elections and their impact on U.S.-China-Taiwan r / Chai, Winberg   Journal Article
Chai, Winberg Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract Outgoing Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was defeated in the historic 2008 presidential and legislative elections, and voters returned the reins of government to the long-ruling Nationalist Party (KMT). The author analyzes the KMT's return to power after eight years of DPP rule, its significance, and its potential to create new stability in East Asia and better cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. The author also examines the reasons for the DPP's resounding defeat, including its traditional oppositional role in Taiwanese politics and its failure to deliver on its promises to reduce corruption and maintain economic well-being. The author further analyzes the DPP policies' disastrous impact on Taiwan's domestic scene and its regional alliances. The author concludes with a prediction of what the KMT's return will mean for U.S.-China-Taiwanese relations.
