Access anti access game in East Asia / Subramanian P, Arjun   Journal Article
Subramanian P, Arjun Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The East Asian theatre is emerging as a region where there are frequent military confrontations. The territorial disputes are the pivot of all recent tensions in the region. China, backed by its increasing economic and military might, is turning more assertive in its claims. The dispute might be regional but any military flare up has few changes of being limited to the regional players. This is because of the security architecture in the region, in which the United States in an important external actor. This is a cause of major concern for China, particularly in the event of a possible non-pacific reunification of Taiwan with the Chinese Mainland or a war with Japan over the island dispute. At present, the US is the only power that could challenge the Chinese military supremacy in the region. Back in the 1996 Taiwan Crisis, the US had deployed two of its aircraft carriers as a signal to China of its resolve to maintain the status quo in the region. Ever since, China began to develop an Anti-Access and Area Denial (A2/ AD) strategy with the sole aim of preventing the US military from intervening in any conflict in the region involving China. This paper looks at the Chinese and US military Strategies that are involving in the region. Specific focus in given to the people`s Liberation Army Air Force bomber Aircraft force which has been modified to fire long range Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCMs) to threaten the US military bases around China, and the future measures that the PLA might take to deny access to US forces in the region.

China’s quest for quantum advantage—Strategic and defense innovation at a new frontier / Kania, Elsa B   Journal Article
Kania, Elsa B Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract China has prioritized quantum science and technology as a critical frontier for its national security and development. To date, Chinese research has already reached a leading position within the discipline, enabled by state support and funding, as well as the recruitment and cultivation of talent. The rapid advances on this front can provide a valuable illustration of the dynamics of China’s evolving innovation ecosystem, including the increased prominence of leading technology companies, and even start-ups, as serious contenders. China’s strategy of military–civil fusion, which aims to create a more integrated ecosystem in science and technology, can contribute to enabling progress in dual-use developments. This case study draws upon the shared framework for this special issue, which provides a method by which to consider the factors that enable defense innovation. Looking forward, these advances could prove consequential for the future strategic balance between China and the United States.

China's antisatellite program: blocking the assassin's mace / Moore, Larry R   Journal Article
Moore, Larry R Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract I analyze the substance and goals of China's antisatellite program. Following China's 2007 antisatellite test that successfully destroyed one of its aging satellites, signs have emerged that China is continuing to research ways to exploit the heavy US reliance on space. This capability is most likely being developed as an "assassin's mace" to gain an advantage against a technologically superior enemy in the event of conflict. I propose a number of countermeasures to negate the threat to US space security

Decoding the evolutionary path of Chinese foreign policy, 1949-: assessments and inferences / Chung, Jae Ho   Journal Article
Chung, Jae Ho Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Chinese foreign policy has made a grand transition during the post-Mao reform era. Chinese foreign policy of the 21st century has become much more open and pragmatic in its relations with the outside world, more extensive in its reach and coverage, highly diversified in its functions and partners, more committed to international norms than before, and much more sophisticated in its dealing with the international community. Yet, the precise balance between the changes and continuities is still quite difficult to gauge. Furthermore, despite crucial visible changes, concerns and worries - even some fears - are discernible with regard to the rise of China. In the last 60 years, Beijing has sought hard to sustain consistencies (shizhong ruyi) in its foreign policy. Perhaps, that is the best clue the world has in inferring the future trajectory of Chinese foreign policy.

Hoping for the Best, preparing for the worst: China's response to US hegemony / Erickson, Andrew; Goldstein, Lyle   Journal Article
Goldstein, Lyle Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2006.
Summary/Abstract In the post-Cold War strategic environment, Beijing could plausibly have opted for Soviet-style geostrategic competition with Washington, but it has not. Chinese leaders have not thus far, and almost certainly will never, amass thousands of nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert or deploy significant forces to a network of bases spanning the globe. Nevertheless, the below assessment of China's increasing hard and soft power yields the conclusion that a Chinese challenge to US hegemony cannot be ruled out. The United States must prudently maintain military forces appropriate to facing a potential peer competitor. At the same time, however, Washington must engage in a process of creative diplomacy that simultaneously matches China's soft power and engages seriously with Beijing to create areas of consensus and cooperation.

Schelling goes to sea: managing perceptions in China's contested zone / Holmes, James R   Journal Article

Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract China has geared its diplomatic and military endeavors since the 1995-96 Taiwan Strait crisis primarily to discouraging the United States(US) from getting involved in a cross-strait war.By constructing combat systems able to hold US naval assets at risk in Asia, and by telegraphing the inportance it attaches to resuming control of Taiwan, Beijing hopes to induce Washington to stand aside or, at a minimum, to hesitate long enough for the Chinese military to accomplish its goals on the island.
