Summary/Abstract |
More than six decades have elapsed since the establishment of the state of Israel, and the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) in 1948, which marked the initiation of a long-lasting conflict that has still not yet been resolved. Israelis and Arabs that claim historical solitary rights on the Holy Land have incurred loads of casualties and endured decades of wars, destruction, agony, and a lack of peaceful and prosperous life. The intensity of the conflict is reflected, among other things, by the substantial fraction of the scarce resources that has been allocated to military spending by the adversaries. Throughout the duration of the conflict, Israel and its major rivals, namely Egypt, Jordan and Syria, recorded an internationally unparalleled military burden. Although these countries have cut their defense spending drastically following the initiation of the peace talks, they still maintain exceptionally high military spending in international standards.

Summary/Abstract |
Israel has very limited indigenous hydrocarbon resources and is located next to the energy-rich Persian Gulf region. This study is divided into two parts. The first part profiles Israel's energy outlook. Specifically, it examine the country's oil and natural gas exploration and potential. The second part discusses the seemingly successful negotiations to export natural gas from Egypt to Israel. This is followed by an analysis of the efforts to export Iraqi oil via Israel (the Mosul-Haifa pipeline) and the attempt to revive the scheme in the aftermath of the 2003 war in Iraq. Finally, the article examines the short-lived experience in exporting Iranian oil to Israel under the Shah and the current status of the Trans-Israel pipeline. The study suggests that regional energy cooperation would benefit all parties and international energy markets. However, such cooperation is unlikely in the near future.

Summary/Abstract |
Columbia University's English Department may seem a surprising place from which to move the world, but this is what Professor Edward Said accomplished. He not only transformed the West's perception of the Israel-Arab conflict, he also led the way toward a new, post-socialist life for leftism in which the proletariat was replaced by "people of color" as the redeemers of humankind. During the ten years that have passed since his death there have been no signs that his extraordinary influence is diminishing.
