Hybrid War and Its Countermeasures: a critique of the literature
/ Johnson, Robert
Johnson, Robert
Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract
This article examines critically the literature of hybrid war and evaluates the countermeasures often proposed. It explains the concept of hybrid warfare and its varied interpretations, illustrating how it is a manifestation of current anxieties in armed conflict. The selection of the literature is based on works that are referenced, that offer a scientific approach, and which review either the phenomenon of hybrid warfare or its countermeasures empirically. Unscientific works have been omitted. The analysis of the literature presented here shows that the antidotes to ‘hybridity’ lie not in the operational or tactical sphere but in strategic and political domains.

Talking 'Bout Our Generation? assessing the concept of “Fourth-Generation Warfare
/ Benbow, Tim

Journal Article

Publication
2008.
Summary/Abstract
This article outlines and evaluates the concept of "fourth-generation warfare" (4GW). It provides an overview of the arguments made by proponents of the concept, and assesses a series of criticisms that have been directed against it, particularly that it tends to exaggerate the decline of the state and that it does not describe anything truly new. The article argues that although there are some serious shortcomings in 4GW theory, it does provide many important observations about the changing nature of contemporary conflict. Despite being a flawed model, it is useful as a corrective to the tendency to focus on state-against-state warfare
