EU's Taiwan policy in a new context / Hungdah Su   Journal Article
Hungdah Su Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract The rise of China, the European Union's (EU's) increasing trade deficit with the People's Republic of China (PRC), and the ongoing negotiations on a new cooperative agreement have all recently contributed to the growing debate over the EU's China policy. Following the coming into effect of theLisbon Treaty, new trends in Asian integration and particularly the fruitful détente between the PRC and Taiwan have been exerting increasing pressure on the EU to rethink and reformulate its current strategy on China and its policy toward Taiwan. A reviewof the development of the EU-Taiwan relationship over the past three decades will be followed by an analysis of the structural factors that have shaped it. Emerging new factors will be examined and their probable consequences for this bilateral relationshipwill be evaluated in order to understand the measures that the EU may adopt in the Taiwan Strait in the new regional and inter-regional context. According to the author's analysis, the EU is under increasing pressure to adopt a more active and politicized strategy in the Strait. In pursuit of its long term interests, the EU should cooperate with the United States vis-à-vis the PRC and insist upon its core values during its engagement in the Strait.

Is the Euro still a success story? an Asian interpretation of t / Hungdah Su   Journal Article
Hungdah Su Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Since outbreak of the sovereign debt crisis in several member states of the Eurozone in 2010, the Euro as a success story was suddenly thrown into doubt. In Asia, more and more scholars and policy analysts, a majority of whom had not focused their study on the EU or Euro before the crisis, have criticized the monetary integration in the Eurozone, put into doubt the value of European integration as a whole, and reiterate their pessimistic theses about the future of the European economy. This article represents a rebuttal to this criticism, arguing that the common currency is truly in difficulty but not in an impasse. A return to a success story of the Euro is still probable, if European leaders and their citizens could reestablish a balancing model between the financial discipline and economic growth in the EU, to which a general and in-depth debate over the future of European integration is indispensable.

Politics of differentiation: enhanced cooperation in the EU and the pathfinder in APEC / Hungdah Su   Journal Article
Hungdah Su Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2007.
Summary/Abstract A large majority of studies on differentiated integration focus their attention on closer or enhanced cooperation in the EU, neglecting similar developments in other regions, for example, the pathfinder in APEC. In comparing enhanced cooperation in the EU with the pathfinder in APEC, this article aims to discover conditions under which ideas of differentiation can emerge and then be transformed into common policies endorsed by all member states in regional integration. It shall also make clear the reasons why the pathfinder has been applied in APEC while enhanced cooperation has never been used in the EU. It will begin with a detailed categorization of sub-integrations. Then, the author comparatively analyzes the developments of enhanced cooperation in the EU and the pathfinder in APEC, and as a conclusion, evaluates the contribution of this analysis to better understanding of differentiation
