Summary/Abstract |
THE THOUSAND-YEAR HISTORY of cooperation and opposition, alliance and hostility, the tragedy of the two world wars, and the decades of bloc confrontation have united the fates of Russians and Germans. Their common past has become a solid foundation for developing bilateral relations that have long gone beyond the framework established by political expediency and economic efficiency. Our interaction has acquired a unique humanitarian dimension that penetrates and cements it at all levels and in all spheres, reflecting its mature and strategic nature.

Summary/Abstract |
INAUGUST 1942, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US special envoy Averell Harriman left the Soviet Union, basking in what seemed to them a great political victory. Stalin had agreed, albeit grudgingly, to their decision to postpone the opening of the second front until 1943. In other words, he had accepted their obvious political perfidy that would prolong the war and cost many millions of Soviet lives. The Soviet leader, however, had not broken off allied relations, a step that [London and Washington] feared more than anything else. He was obviously determined to fight until the enemy was routed. The Soviet Union had no other option: To survive, it had to continue fighting with all available resources.

Summary/Abstract |
EVERYBODY at some point gets a chance to prove their mettle. This is not a stroke of luck, but a tough challenge and difficult choice for everyone at their own level: in wisdom or simplicity, strength or weakness, health or infirmity, wealth or poverty - to choose to follow the straight and familiar path or to scale new heights. Only those who rise to the challenge leave their mark in history. William Averell Harriman was one such person: He sought out challenges and accepted them with boldness and determination. He never retreated from or skirted them.

Summary/Abstract |
ANY NATIONAL CRISIS tests a country's political system, exposing its latent vices and vulnerabilities. European countries have been plunged into such crises when, after times of affluent, carefree existence, they were spontaneously inundated by refugees from conflict-stricken areas in the Middle East and North Africa. One wonders, though, whether this flood of newcomers was spontaneous at all - too sudden to come from nowhere, it has had clear causes, the flows of refugees have had specific destinations and appear to have followed specific transit routes.

Summary/Abstract |
ONCE upon a time, in a disadvantaged province of a great empire, Pontius Pilate asked someone he thought was a little man from the deep people: "What is truth?" The source provides no response.1 Since then, the prefect's fate has been lost to history, and the eternal Rome enjoyed a mere 450-year moment in history. But the question, glorified, like the questioner himself, by the One Who Did Not Answer, has remained, making its way from theology into every field of scientific knowledge with the unbreakable tenacity of the Roman legions.

Summary/Abstract |
THE VICTORY of Angela Merkel and the CDU/CSU bloc she led in the Bundestag elections of September 22, 2013 (41.5%) was expected and quite predictable1 - and therefore it came as no surprise to anyone. Significantly, this time around the Germans were not even electing a party, but a concrete leader with whom solely in a personal capacity are associated hopes for stability and firm-handed state management. What did come as a bit of a surprise was the defeat of the FDP, Christian Democrats' former ruling coalition partners, who with 4.8 percent fell out of big politics.

Summary/Abstract |
LIKE DEFENSE MECHANISMS in any living thing designed to constantly cope with changing reality and protect them against harmful factors, defense mechanisms of a state, which still hinge on its armed forces, ought to evolve to be able at any moment to adequately react to modern challenges and threats. The development level of these defense mechanisms, their modernity and efficiency, their attractiveness at home and abroad are good indicators of the health and robustness of the state as an organism.
Renovation, optimization and modernization are processes that must be taking place constantly in the system of armed forces, otherwise this system is doomed to stagnation and lagging behind which is difficult and costly to end. Germany is currently trying to make up for precisely this kind of lagging behind.

Summary/Abstract |
THE IMAGE OF MODERN RUSSIA is at present still in the formative stage, gradually transforming into a stable and solid system capable of standing up to the negative impacts of the media environment. Such incompletion, not infrequently coupled with a lack of effective interaction between elements in this system, still leaves a vast information vacuum that is actively being filled with assessments and interpretations that are far from objective and sometimes openly hostile to Russia's interests. As they build up, these negative elements create a basis for the development of false perceptions about our state's position on the international arena and the specifics of its political, economic, and social development.
