Summary/Abstract |
Using a form of fictional reportage he terms the 'document novel' Murakami Ry has spent the past ten years probing the underlying causes of many of Japan's most critical social problems, from domestic violence and the rising school drop-out rate to phenomena such as 'compensated dating' and the hikikomori problem. At the root of these issues stands one seemingly insurmountable culprit: the recent completion of Japan's 'project of modernization'. The present essay offers a close reading of three recent Murakami novels, two dealing with mass killers (In za miso s pu, 1997, and Ky?seich , 2000), the third with a ten year-long popular uprising of middle school students (Kib? no kuni no ekusodasu, 2000). Its purpose is to show how two radically different works express essentially the same message: that Japan has reached a point where its current social and political structures, grounded in modernization (kindaika), must give way to a new evolutionary stage of social development. Within the slightly futuristic setting that has become a Murakami trademark, the author shows us an apocalyptic vision of Japan that may well be realized before long unless Japanese politicians, the mass media, and the general public start thinking more seriously about the root causes of the many social and economic crises that beset Japan.

Summary/Abstract |
Written on the 50th anniversary, this article focuses on the negotiations between Britain and the United States which led to the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement and the beginning of the 'special nuclear relationship' which has lasted down to the present day. It is argued that the eventual success of the negotiations had a lot to do with the key roles of Eisenhower and Macmillan but that a transatlantic 'advocacy coaltion' of nuclear scientists, defence and intelligence officials also played an important part at the operational level in achieving and subsequently shaping the kind of relationship which developed. Attention is also given to the longer term significance of the agreement, especially in terms of the arguments about its impact on nuclear proliferation.

Summary/Abstract |
In this introduction, the editors trace the increasing theoretical diversity of ASEAN research and discuss the contributions to this issue against the current state of the art. Contributions confirm the post-Asian crisis advancement of constructivist scholarship, but by also analyzing ASEAN from the Liberal and English school perspectives, the articles assembled in this issue nevertheless stand for theoretical pluralism. This article continues to open a governance perspective and, against this background, attests to ASEAN's marked success in pacifying an erstwhile turbulent world region but also to ASEAN's much more ambiguous record in responding to the new challenges associated with globalization

Summary/Abstract |
Where does the clash of civilizations thesis and its underlying us-versus-them mentality come from? How has the idea been engineered historically and ideologically in the 'east' and 'west'? What were the functions of Christianity and Islam to these ends? These are some of the questions that will be discussed in this article that engages both the clash of civilizations thesis and the discourse of 'Orientalism' more generally. Dissecting the many manifestations of mutual retributions, the article establishes the nuances of the 'clash' mentality within the constructs we commonly refer to as 'Islam' and the 'west', showing how it is based on a questionable ontology, how it has served particular political interests and how it is not inevitable. What is presented, rather, is a short genealogy of this idea, dispelling some of its underlying myths and inventions along the way
