Bleiburg: the creation of a National Martyrology / Kolsto, Pal   Journal Article
Kolsto, Pal Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract In a study of historical myths in South Eastern Europe in 2005 I identified four different types of mythologies, one of which was the myth of martyrdom (Kolsto 2005). I pointed out that while nations most of the time celebrate their victories and moments of glory, occasionally their great tragedies and defeats are also embellished into mythical stories and made into objects of collective commemoration. As a prime example of mythologised defeats in the history of the Balkan peoples I-like many other authors-singled out the battle of Kosovo in 1389, an event which in contemporary Serbian consciousness has come to be regarded as the moment when the Serb nation chose righteousness and truth over earthly power (Vuchinich & Emmert 1991; Anzulovic 1999, pp. 11-22; Judah 2000).

Rossellini, Pontecorvo, and the neorealist cinema of insurgency / Rich, Paul B   Article
Rich, Paul B Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article examines the tradition of Italian neorealism and the importance it has for films depicting guerrilla insurgencies. It looks in particular at the two films by Roberto Rossellini Rome Open City and Paisa as well as the later film by Nanni Loy Four Days in Naples. It then proceeds to locate Gillo Pontecorvo's iconic film The Battle of Algiers within this neorealist tradition and examines the degree to which the director succeeded in continuing the basic traditions of neorealism into the context of the Algerian war of Independence. The article concludes that while this film remains of great interest it should be situated in the period when it was produced and is in many ways radically disconnected from many insurgent movements of the present day.

Something is wrong with our army…: command, leadership and Italian military failure in the first Libyan campaign, 1940-41 / Stockings, Craig   Journal Article
Stockings, Craig Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract There is no question that the First Libyan Campaign of 1940-41 was a military disaster for Italy. However, for all of the ethnic slurs and cultural stereotyping levelled at Italian military performance in North Africa by historians and popular authors alike, relatively little research effort invested into identifying the real military disadvantages under which Mussolini's soldiers in this theatre fought. When understood as a product of measurable and objective military factors, like the issue of leadership for example, the rout of the 10th Army takes on an entirely new complexion. The subsequent reputation of Italian soldiers as embarrassing battlefield liabilities in the Western Desert in this period is exposed as unfair. This overlooks the handicaps they fought under, and often ignores the bravery displayed in spite of them all. Like the Australians, the Italians in the Western Desert were ordinary men, no more and no less. In truth, it is singularly unsurprising that so many were killed or surrendered without putting up much real resistance. They faced challenges and conditions that would have handicapped troops from any country.

Summary/Abstract Trump supporters’ assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, finds an intriguing precedent in Mussolini’s March on Rome in October 1922. This article explores the similarities and differences between the two events and the two leaders and seeks to answer the question of why one was a failure and the other a success.
