Summary/Abstract The validity of development has been cast into doubt by postmodern critiques that have highlighted its failings. Attempts to rehabilitate the idea of development have brought ethics into play. This paper examines attempts to identify a viable basis for development based on post-structuralist ethical theories developed by analysts such as Levinas and Derrida that privilege the concept of alterity, or respect for the other. This approach is contrasted with Badiou's influential critique of an alterity-based ethics, critically examining his alternative of an ethics of the same. The article concludes by incorporating some of Badiou's insights into a reformulated ethics of alterity.

Summary/Abstract Democratization scholars argue that Turkey has successfully transitioned to democracy and is consolidating liberal democracy. The political elite and the parties are deemed important factors in crafting democracies. However, the Turkish political leadership has not changed much until recently; therefore, it remains a puzzle why consolidation is taking place. There are two explanations: (1) there is no consolidation of democracy (2) a factor other than the turnover in political elite/change in the political system has led to consolidation. I argue that consolidation is in progress because of the lengthy but persistent transformation of the military in Turkey. I examine previously overlooked changes in Turkish military with respect to its structure and its relations to the society. I find that the change in the military contributes to the consolidation of democracy in Turkey, and other transitional democracies. As with any other institutional change, this process is slow and risky.

Summary/Abstract Abstract This article analyzes two responses by the Left to the turbulent events of 1968 in Europe and the failed attempt at revolution: the turn towards postmodern theory and the “minorities policy” is contrasted with the transition to urban guerilla warfare. The paper argues that the theoretical degradation of a considerable part of leftist thought after 1968 was a result of the transition to postmodernist attitudes. The article also analyzes the penetration of these trends into the concept of sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein, one of the most influential left-wing theorists. The article traces the logic behind the emergence of urban guerillas in Europe and the causes of their defeat. By analyzing both the postmodern and ultra-radical experience, the author offers some conclusions regarding the current situation and the future of Europe’s Left.
