Summary/Abstract At the end of the 1910s, Du Yaquan, Chinese thinker, essayer, and popularizer of science, became a proponent of the ideology of cultural conservatism, which called for a mutual blending and harmonization of the cultures of China and the West. His political views, including the concept of the continuity of statehood, his interpretation of the relationship between the old and new in China's development, and his understanding of the social basis of the revolution are examined using primary sources. It is concluded that Du's world view became an expression of the ideas of conservatism, which tried to prevent a break with national traditions in the course of building a new culture.

Summary/Abstract China's growing resolve annoys the West, but today's global leaders remain quite skeptical about the chances of an alternative "Chinese world order." Creating a different world order requires a different set of political values. If one assumes that China has neither the ideology nor values other countries may find attractive enough, it is easy to surmise that the chances of Chinas international agenda look slim.

Summary/Abstract The 2nd International Sinological Conference devoted to the subject "Sinology and Intercultural Contacts" was held in Beijing at the People's University of China on October 30-31, 2009. There were six panels working within the framework of the scientific forum, which discussed the relations between Sinology and the dialogue of cultures, Sinology and the study of history, Chinese literature, translations of Chinese classical texts, and Chinese opera. There was the "Forum of Confucian Institutes" at which Chinese and foreign participants spoke of teaching the Chinese language in foreign environment. Two round-table discussions were organized: one was devoted to the study of previously unknown Chinese texts discovered by archaeologists, and the other - to the interaction between Chinese literature and contemporary Sinology. More than one hundred scholars from various educational and research institutions of the PRC took part in the work of the conference, and about twenty scholars represented Taiwan, Xianggang and Aomen. About fifty foreign guests attended the conference.
