Canada's comprehensive approach in Afghanistan: a critical review of literature, 2001-2011 / Dion, Eric   Journal Article
Dion, Eric Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Following a critical review of the extensive literature on the topic of Canada's Comprehensive Approach in Afghanistan, from 2001 to 2011, this article traces the genealogy of the approach, identifies three major contributions as well as three serious limitations. A subsequent qualitative analysis of the content of this literature, as well as a quantitative meta-analysis provide a deeper than ever understanding of the complexity of Canada's so-called Comprehensive Approach and as such, presents the theoretical underpinnings of a pragmatic executive decision-making model for Canada's future engagements, to be developed through further iterations of grounded theory.

Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost: a Grounded theory approach to the comparative study of decision-making in the NAC and PSC / Smith, Simon J; Tomic, Nikola; Gebhard, Carmen   Journal Article
Gebhard, Carmen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Studies of the relationship between the EU and NATO often focus on the limitations of cooperation, be it at the political or the operational level. However, little is known about the functioning of the political institutional linkages between the EU and NATO. This article therefore studies the main decision-making bodies of the two organisations at the political, ambassadorial level, namely the Political and Security Committee (PSC) of the EU and the North Atlantic Council (NAC) in NATO, as well as their joint meetings. The article employs an inductive Grounded Theory approach, drawing on open-ended interviews with PSC and NAC ambassadors, which reveal direct insights from the objects of analysis. The findings emphasise the impact of both structural and more agency-related categories on decision-making in these three fora. The article thus addresses both the paucity of study on these bodies more broadly and the complete lacuna on joint PSC–NAC meetings specifically, warranting the inductive approach this article endorses.

Fear and Pride Among Fighter Pilots: Combat Emotions During a Bombing Campaign / Moldjord, Christian; Fredriksen, Paal Kristian ; Browning, Larry D   Journal Article
Moldjord, Christian Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article analyzes the combat emotions of Royal Norwegian Air Force Fighter pilots (hereafter RNoAF) during their bombing campaign over Libya in 2011. Using grounded theory in our interviews with them, we identified 12 categories of their emotions and behaviors, with variations in pride and fear emerging as the two key themes. We show how those two emotions thread through the literature of emotions in combat, and show further how our data, and the resulting matrix from an analysis of it, both apply to and extend that literature. We also show how the high and low variations of pride and fear interact to both support and counter each other. Our findings thus make an important contribution to the combat emotions literature on the action and behavior of fighter pilots.

Grounded theory perspective on leadership in multicultural schools / Plessis, Elize du ; Marais, Petro   Journal Article
Elize du Plessis, Petro Marais Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The methodology of grounded theory has great potential to contribute to our understanding of leadership within particular substantive contexts. Leadership is a global phenomenon, but appears to have a variety of attributes and seems to elude clear definition. In this research we argue that such variation is contextually derived. Leadership is not only a socially influenced process but also a relation-influenced process that occurs within a social system. The focus in this paper is on the challenges facing leaders engaged in multicultural education. In general, grounded theorists seek to develop theory inductively from systematically gathered and analysed data. An integrative picture or story is developed from this process. In the present instance we explore how conducting grounded theory research according to a qualitative approach accentuates the need to understand and explain contextualised leadership. We conclude by suggesting how leaders might overcome challenges in multicultural education.

Sexual arenas, alcohol (Ab)use, and predatory leadership: facilitators of US military sexual violence / Buscha, Connie   Journal Article
Buscha, Connie Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Scholars argue that, historically, military women have not been considered equals to men in kinship and, therefore, have and will likely continue to experience more violence and greater fear of violence. The All-Volunteer Force (AVF) may even foster military sexual violence through sexual arenas in work-home spaces, alcohol (ab)use fueling sexual encounters between colleagues, and predatory leadership. This exploratory, grounded theory study captures insights of women veterans (n = 20) entering service between 1964 and 2016. Full inclusion is alleged, yet military women are objectified and “othered,” targets of sex-based attention, predation, and violence. From these data, military sexual violence (MSV) characterizes the AVF. To mitigate this, a renewed commitment to the US military’s historical ideal of altruistic care is necessary to realize the full inclusion of women and reduce if not eliminate military sexual violence.

Shifting modus operandi of jihadist foreign fighters from the Netherlands between 2000 and 2013: a crime script analysis / Bie, Jasper L de; Poot, Christianne J. de ; Leun, Joanne P van der   Article
Bie, Jasper L de Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article describes the development of foreign fighters’ preparatory modes of operation between 2000 and 2013, based on an analysis of 17 closed police investigations and 21 semi-structured interviews with police investigators, public prosecutors, and lawyers. Through the use of grounded theory methods and a crime script analysis, we find that the phenomenon is not as new as is often portrayed. It changes over time as changing opportunity structures have an impact on the activities foreign fighters undertake during the preparation phase. We demonstrate how geopolitical changes, social opportunity structures, and technological developments affect the modus operandi over time. One of the implications of our findings is that the dynamic nature of the foreign fighting phenomenon requires flexible and tailored prevention measures.
