Summary/Abstract

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf resigned as impeachment proceedings were due to begin. Talks on a power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe became bogged down amid the further disintegration of the economy. Bangladesh held its first elections since the army seized power last year. The Indian government survived a critical vote of confidence over a controversial nuclear deal with the US. Levy Mwanawasa, the Zambian president, died. Kenya's finance minister, a key ally of the president, resigned over the allegedly dubious sale of a state-owned hotel to Libya. The Nigerian president sacked military chiefs in a further distancing of the government from the previous regime.
