Catholic church in Timor-Leste and the Indonesian occupation / Hodge, Joel   Journal Article
Hodge, Joel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract During the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste (1975-99), the Roman Catholic Church grew in importance to the East Timorese people. This is demonstrated by the large increase in Timorese affiliation to the Church: 25-30% of the populace were baptized Catholics in 1975 compared with over 90% in the 1990s. Various explanations have been offered for this growth, many of which identify 'extrinsic' factors such as the religious prescriptions of Indonesian law or the pressures of Islamization. While acknowledging the importance of these factors, this paper argues that certain intrinsic factors substantially influenced the identification of the Timorese experience of occupation with Catholic faith and solidarity. An understanding of these intrinsic factors can provide a more expansive understanding of Timorese culture, experience and history. Drawing on original research into the faith and experience of Timorese people during the occupation, the author explores the relationship between suffering, resistance and the Catholic faith of the Timorese in four areas: language; 'a spirituality of resistance'; martyrdom; and sanctuary and advocacy for the persecuted. The paper draws on the insights of French philosopher and literary critic, René Girard, regarding the importance of Christianity in the context of violence. Girard has argued for a particular understanding of the centrality of the victim in human culture and of how Christianity helps to reveal this centrality. Girard's perspective sheds light on how the Timorese came to terms with their experience of suffering and violence under Indonesian occupation through their identification with Jesus Christ and the Church.

Hidden Sufis and political effects of the unseen: cosmological activism in contemporary Lahore, Pakistan / Matzen, Ida Sofie   Journal Article
Matzen, Ida Sofie Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lahore, Pakistan, this article explores the political effects of the activities of hidden Sufi saints. In Pakistan, hidden Sufis are often said to intervene in worldly affairs (for example, in the killing of Osama bin Laden). Analyzing the wider cosmological background for claims to Sufi supremacy and power, I show how unseen—or in fact ‘supremely visible’—domains outstrip the visible world. In doing so, I examine how Sufi followers draw on esoteric knowledge to create what is in effect a political theory to analyze the violent present of opposition and terror attacks. Contrary to a general notion of Pakistani Sufis as inherently apolitical, the article thus offers an account of Sufi protection and spiritual governance as instances of ‘cosmological activism.’ To appreciate local Sufi theorizing and practices as expressions of immanent political modalities of Pakistani Sufism, I attend to my interlocutors’ versions of the Sufi principle of the ‘oneness of existence’ (wahdat al-wujud) as a potential anthropological analytics.

Role of religion, spirituality and faith in development: a critical theory approach / Lunn, Jenny   Journal Article
Lunn, Jenny Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Religion, spirituality and faith have suffered from long-term and systematic neglect in development theory, policy making and practice, although there has been a noticeable turnover the past 10 years. This paper explores the role of religion, spirituality and faith in development in the past, present and future by applying three core concepts from critical theory-grounding of knowledge in historical context, critique through dialectical process, and identification of future potentialities for emancipation and self-determination. It concludes that religion, spirituality and faith have a role to play in the future of development, particularly in ensuring that it is appropriate and sustainable. The paper also serves to counter critics who claim that critical theory has no resonance to contemporary social research.

Spirituality interpreted: a case of complex lexical borrowing in Japanese / Minagawa, Harumi   Journal Article
Minagawa, Harumi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Lexical borrowing is associated with emerging social needs. It provides a new word for a newly introduced idea or thing, replaces a native word adding trendiness or euphemism, allows ambiguity, etc. The noun supirichuariti ('spirituality') and the adjective supirichuaru-na ('spiritual') present an intriguing case of borrowing in Japanese. Both emerged in the wider context of the 'New Spirituality' movements and culture in Japan. They began to be used in such professional fields as terminal care, psychology, and education in the 1990s. More recently the use of the word supirichuaru, in particular, has become trendy in the narrower context of a 'spiritual boom', in which it is often associated with 'spiritualism', and has come to refer to a range of interests and experiences associated with the boom. By drawing data from a wide range of discourse genres, this article elucidates the complexity of the borrowing processes. The article also argues that these Western loanwords, used in different subcultures with differing and often elusive meanings, are linguistic evidence, however ephemeral it may be, that reveals a common thread which runs through the current spiritual culture in Japan, where no native Japanese words have been able to take up the role.

Way of abstinence: stigma and spirituality in Danshukai, a Japanese self-help organisation for alcoholics / Chenhall, Richard; Oka, Tomofumi   Journal Article
Chenhall, Richard Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Stigma associated with alcoholism is common in Japan, and individuals who suffer from alcoholism often feel that it is a taboo to discuss their problems with alcohol in the general public. This paper describes the way in which the self-help group called Danshukai offers a model for recovery for people suffering from alcoholism in Japan. Since 2006, the authors have been involved in various meetings and conducted conversational and semi-structured interviews with leaders and rank-and-file members of Danshukai. In Danshukai, recovery is viewed as a spiritual process offering the potential for a new life compared to models offered by medical treatment that place little emphasis on the role of spirituality in recovery. While medical models seek to reduce alcohol-related stigma by viewing it as a treatable ‘disease’, rather than a personality weakness, Danshukai encourages members to embrace their identity as a Danshukai member and to engage with a ‘way of abstinence’ that includes a lifelong commitment to Danshukai activities and helping others with similar problems.
