Charge me if you can: assessing political biases in vote-buying verdicts in democratic Taiwan (2000-2010) / Chung-li Wu   Journal Article
Chung-li WU Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract While the judicial system is an important part of any given political regime, other than in a few Western countries, it has received comparatively little attention. This study employs vote-buying litigation as a litmus test to inquire whether or not the judiciary in Taiwan is politically biased in its judgments. Vote buying has long marred Taiwan's elections and the general public does not seem to trust the judicial system to be independent of political influences. This study examines the impact of political variables (including partisanship, whether candidates are elected or not, and the type of election) on court decisions in vote-buying litigation between 2000 and 2010. The article looks at these decisions at three levels: district courts, high courts, and the Supreme Court. The empirical findings indicate that the effects of political factors are considerably less an influence than expected on trial outcomes.

Fear as a political factor / Enroth, Henrik   Journal Article
Enroth, Henrik Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In past decades, social and cultural theory as well as international relations theory and political theory have been preoccupied with the subject of fear. In this article, I return the conversation about fear as a political factor to what may be the oldest subject in the book: the connection between fear and political authority. Today, I suggest, we are in the midst of a shift in our understanding of this relationship, prompted not least by efforts to come to terms, analytically and politically, with the challenges of climate change. The article seeks to get a clearer view of this shift by identifying and analyzing three distinct stories in academic and public discourse about fear and political authority. By way of conclusion, I venture that these mutations in our ways of thinking, speaking, and feeling about political authority and fear point toward a model of political authority for post-sovereign conditions.

Mediterranean countries and corruption: political, economic, and social factors / Rontos, Kostas; Salvati, Luca; Sioussiouras, Petros; Vavouras, Ioannis   Journal Article
Sioussiouras, Petros Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The authors propose a classification of the perceived corruption levels of Mediterranean countries according to key political, economic, and social factors. While relevant empirical research has shown the extent of corruption in various countries by analyzing differences in their respective values on a corruption perceptions index, the variables used here include additional data such as gross national income per person in purchasing power parities, a political rights index, a civil liberties index, and a nonincome human development index. Although northern Mediterranean countries are distinguished from Arab and Balkan countries, the labels developed and developing countries in the Mediterranean seem too simplistic when describing the marked heterogeneity within these two groups. The lack of homogeneity can be attributed to institutional and cultural country- specific factors rather than to crude differences in levels of economic development. This suggests that policies against corruption should target a complex ensemble of driving factors not limited to the economic characteristics of an individual country and should include social political, cultural, institutional, and territorial considerations.

Politics of World War II in contemporary Ukraine / Katchanovski, Ivan   Journal Article
Katchanovski, Ivan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This study examines the role of political factors in attitudes toward World War II in contemporary Ukraine. The research question is which factors determine public views of the principal warring sides and their leaders in Ukraine. The analysis of the 2012 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology survey shows that regional values, political party preferences, ethnicity, language, and age have significant effects on views of the Red Army and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during the war and attitudes toward the wartime activities of Joseph Stalin and Roman Shukhevych. Public perceptions of the German Army and Adolf Hitler in Ukraine do not vary much across regions, political parties, and ethnic, language, age, and sex groups.
