I approve this candidate: the strategic use of ad endorsements in the 2008 election / Paul, Newly; York, Chance   Article
Paul, Newly Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Contextual and strategic factors that influence the use of endorsements in political advertisements represent an underexplored area of the scholarly literature, resulting in a gap between the art and science of campaigning and the advertising-effects literature. This article uses data from the Wisconsin Ad Project to study endorsements in ads aired during the 2008 election cycle. We show that endorsements are used strategically by campaigns and that four factors—candidate characteristics, campaign characteristics, ad format, and timing—affect whether an ad containing an endorsement is aired. Specifically, endorsements are more likely to appear in positive ads, are primarily used by incumbents and female candidates, are less likely to appear in competitive races, and tend to air less frequently as a campaign progresses.

Party spirit made flesh: the production of legitimacy in the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake / Sorace, Christian   Journal Article
Sorace, Christian Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article argues that the Party retains a tradition of seeking to revitalize its legitimacy through demonstrations of benevolence and glory. The post-2008 Sichuan earthquake provided just such an opportunity to mobilize the discourse of “Party spirit” and display the willingness of cadres to suffer and sacrifice themselves on behalf of the people. In addition to being grist for the propaganda mill, these norms and expectations were implemented in concrete policy directives and work pressures. Local cadres, who were also earthquake survivors, started to suffer from exhaustion, insomnia, and depression. After high-profile suicides by several local cadres, the Party adopted a therapeutic discourse in order to address the psychological needs of individual cadres, though these gentler policies seem doomed to be short-lived.

Reforming the presidential nomination process / Tolbert, Caroline; Squire, Peverill   Journal Article
Tolbert, Caroline Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract The 2008 presidential nomination was marked by the most aggressive frontloading in recent history; the process was a mess from the outset. Frontloading is the trend in recent presidential nominations in which states schedule their primaries and caucuses near the beginning of the delegate-selection season to have a greater impact on the process. In 1976, 10% of the delegates had been chosen by March 2. In 2008, 70% of the delegates had been chosen by that same date. As part of their ongoing efforts to address frontloading and other problems, both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) revised the schedules and rules for 2008 presidential primary elections and caucuses.

US-Russian nuclear arms control: forward and retro after 2008? / Cimbala, Stephen J   Journal Article
Cimbala, Stephen J Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract The arrival of a new US administration in 2009 is a swinging door with respect to opportunities for Russian-American cooperation in strategic nuclear arms reductions and nonproliferation. Both US presidential candidates in 2008 supported nuclear abolition as a theoretically desirable goal, and the Obama administration will certainly pursue nuclear arms reductions consistent with already agreed, or lower, levels. Missile defenses complicate US-Russian relations on this issue, but they pose negotiable, not insurmountable, barriers to further arms reductions and strategic stability.

Who is nationalist now in China?: some findings from the 2008 East Asian social survey / Yongshin, Kim ; Seokho, Kim ; Doo Hwan, Kim   Journal Article
Kim Yongshin, Kim Doo Hwan, Kim Seokho Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This study examines the major sources of Chinese new nationalism among the Chinese populace two decades after the 1989 Tiananmen movement. Based on the 2008 East Asian Social Survey (EASS) using China data collected nationwide, this research finds that China’s major sources of popular nationalism in 2008 are largely consistent with “New Left” intellectuals’ propositions. In contemporary China, Chinese national identity is premised on identification with Asia rather than Western countries and Japan as the “other” that supports China’s self-image as a “victim”. This new identity boundary has enabled the positive roles and traits of Confucian culture to build and shape Chinese new nationalism.
