Overview of Hungarian space activity: plenty of potential, not enough support / Ferencz, Csaba   Journal Article
Ferencz, Csaba Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract The era of modern space research and applications began with the 1945-46 Moon-radar experiments and with the successful launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1. Hungary and Hungarian engineers/researchers were present at the birth of this new and important discipline. As a consequence of the Second World War Hungary became part of the Soviet bloc and, for the first 30 years of the Space Age, Hungarian space activity was carried out mainly within Intercosmos; however, some highlights were produced. After the collapse of the communist dictatorship Hungarian space activity was successfully rebuilt and the past 20 years have seen the beginning of the integration of Hungarian space activity into ESA and EU space policy. Hungarian society's attitude to the country's space activity is complex, as is that of its decision makers. This largely results from the simplified picture of global space activity and Hungarian participation therein in people's minds and from the ignorance of the country's decision makers. While this is basically a global problem, it has a special Hungarian aspect in the view that a small country has no real role in the world, in the EU, in ESA or in global space activity. We have a task: to change this mind-set.

Russia and Southeast Asia: growing cooperation in aviation and space research / Urlyapov, V   Journal Article
Urlyapov, V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract BREAKTHROUGHS are not too frequent in cooperation between Russia and countries in Southeast Asia. It is all the more gratifying to know that they still happen. A breakthrough made in July 2010 was in civil aviation when the Russian exhibitors at the Farnborough International Airshow won a string of major contracts and reached promising accords with customers in ASEAN. The Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (CJSC) sealed a deal with Indonesia's Kartika Airlines for the delivery of 30 SSJ100 airliners in 2012-2015 worth nearly $1 billion. Thailand's Orient Thai Airlines is planning to purchase 12 more similar Superjet-100 planes. In Farnborough, it signed a memorandum of intent to sign a deal with Sukhoi before the end of 2010. Among Sukhoi's customers, in addition to the above Indonesian company, is the Laotian Phongsavanh Airlines which placed an order for three Superjet-100 aircraft (delivery time, 2012).

Space research today / Zeleny, L   Journal Article
Zeleny, L Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract International Affairs: Mr. Zeleny, the U.S. has decided to stop space shuttle flights. Does this mean that the U.S. space program is going through a period of profound change? Academician Zeleny: Indeed, the Barak Obama administration confirmed in early 2010 its intention to stop space shuttle flights and to replace the Constellation Program by a new strategy in the field of manned space missions. It is planned to attract private firms to the development of technologies for delivering cargoes and astronauts into space and simultaneously to conduct research and development on the space infrastructure of the future, including new-generation rocket engines. And, only 5-10 years later, it was planned to begin work on the construction of a new super-heavy launch vehicle and spaceship for long-distance space flights.
