Defence beyond design: towards a new nuclear paradigm / Mishra, Sitakanta   Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The realm of ‘nuclear technology’ is amongst the most beguiling subjects of the human civilisation for the fact that words like ‘atom’ and ‘radiation’ have engendered both lasting fear as well as abounding hope in many. However, what is less certain is why it has entrenched such strong group (pro- and anti-nuclear) alignments. Fingers point towards the ‘risk’ associated with nuclear technology; but risk perception is a “combination of facts and fears, intellect and instinct, reason and gut reaction”; it is a ‘subjective’, not a purely rational and fact-based process. Therefore, any hasty response to a perceived risk may pose a danger by itself. Moreover, risk is calculated by multiplying the probability of the consequence by the severity of the consequence. On the other hand, the unrealised lofty goal of abundant energy through the nuclear route and a few nuclear disasters have given rise to public scepticism.

Summary/Abstract In retrospect, China’s strategic and economic interest in South Asia and consequent inroad into India’s backyard has a long history. The whole phenomenon of China getting involved in South Asian region – India’s natural sphere of influence –stated in mid-1950s as a policyof cushioning smaller neighbours’ discomfort vis-à-vis India. Starting with Pakistan and Nepal, China offered itself to be a counterweight around to other countries in the region.

Evolution of the cruise missile discourse: a conceptual construct / Mishra, Sitakanta   Journal Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract In a conceptual construct, Sitakanta Mishra argues that cruise missiles have arrived as a weapon of choice rather than a mere supplement in the global inventory of weapons. He concludes that while overall the cruise is a sober success, discourse of the weapon has got relatively less attention in strategic studies. He believes that this has been more due to the ballistic missile being associated with nuclear weapons. But though the missile discourse is much older than the nuclear discourse, one needs to resort to a comparative study on the psycho-dynamic aspects of weapon systems. In pursuit of this, at the basic, one needs to identify the nuances in the politics and psyche involving 'atom-power' while comparing them with the nuances involving the lesser known, lesser publicised concept of 'air-power' and aerodynamism.

G20 Presidency and the Challenging Opportunities for India / Mishra, Sitakanta ; Panchal, Riva   Journal Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract G20 played a crucial role until now in addressing the global financial crisis, the level of commitment towards tackling a wide range of current global issues remains uncertain. The G20’s rotating presidency system has resulted in numerous policy initiatives being introduced during leader’s summits, which often require subsequent presidencies to follow up on them. This approach does not provide adequate consistency, continuity, or peer pressure to ensure the implementation of relevant policy changes. As a result, the G20’s current format may be inadequate in delivering tangible outcomes for the issues at hand.

Missile Walls in the Pacific: Who Can Break Through? / Mishra, Sitakanta   Journal Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Indo-Pacific geopolitical discourse is still evolving and entering the post-INF era where the regional states may face dim prospects for arms control and potentially a fierce theatre-level, missile-led arms race. Gradually, the proliferation of missiles and missile defence systems is becoming the ‘new normal’ in the world. In particular, Indo-Pacific would be the intense theatre of missile deployment, transfer as well as employment and all these happening keeping in tandem with the evolution of geopolitical rivalry. It would be safe to predict that the demand for Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) technology will increase in the Indo-Pacific.

Nuclear prodigal in Korean Peninsula / Mishra, Sitakanta   Journal Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The current geostrategic imbroglio in Northeast Asia in general and Korean peninsula in particular is the most enduring bout of the Cold War. In pursuit of peace, seven decades ever since the Korean War of 1950s, no tangible outcome could be achieved. Caught between powerful demagogues (USA, China, Russia, Japan, and South Korea) with their own conflicting agendas, along with North Korea’s own sense of ‘small country’ and its authoritarian ruler’s fear of regime ouster by USA, Pyongyang took refuge of nuclear deterrence.

Nuclear safety security safeguards: the intricate interface / Mishra, Sitakanta   Journal Article
Mishra, Sitakanta Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Since its inception, nuclear technology has evoked a sense of zeal as well as awe because of its immense constructive and destructive potential. By now, the world has come a long way, experiencing both: around 540 nuclear reactors operating in countries producing 372,000 MWe (13.5 percent of the world`s electricity), radioactive materials used in many sectors enriching human life; on the other hand, two nuclear bomb have been used in war and around 19,000 more are stockpiled; during the same time, three major nuclear accidents occurred, resulting in some human suffering, and misuse of nuclear material by non-states actors is widely apprehended. Therefore, the balance sheet may be argued to be mixed, implying that we succeeded as much we failed with nuclear technology. After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, what would be the fate of nuclear technology or which direction the nuclear energy discourse will move in has been a matter of speculation. This study, premised on the assumption that nuclear technology or nuclear energy cannot be ignored as it has an edge over other for a better management paradigm by looking beyond the design basis threats to address inherent loopholes. Deconstructing the real and assumed threats (accident, misuse, and terror), this study prescribes a coherent and integrated strategy devoid of political and social panic.
