Against politics: Walter Benjamin on justice, judaism, and the possibility of ethics / Lesch, Charles H   Journal Article
Lesch, Charles H Journal Article

Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Is politics compatible with the moral life? Recent attempts to revivify democracy have stressed the lived experience of political activity, the democratic character of the spontaneous moment and the popular movement. This article raises some concerns about such agonistic enthusiasm via an original reading of Walter Benjamin's political thought. For Benjamin, politics corrodes our everyday lives and moral conduct. His response is to envision a space for ethics wholly apart from the violence (Gewalt) that sustains propertied political order, a purified version of the Kantian kingdom of ends that he calls the "state of justice." Yet deprived of the coercive instrumentality of politics, there is no action that could lead humanity directly to such a state. To surmount this paradox, Benjamin culls from sources in Jewish political theology, and in particular, Jewish ideas about justice and the community of the righteous. In so doing, he offers a new and radical ethical critique of politics that may hold special relevance in our politics-saturated age.

Passions, patriotism and nationalism, and Germaine de Staël / Sluga, Glenda   Journal Article
Sluga, Glenda Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This essay examines the influence of sentimentalism on conceptions of patriotism at the turn of the nineteenth century in order to historicise conventional views of the nature of patriotism as a fundamental human emotion. It uses a focus on the intellectual thought of Germaine de Staël in order to understand how a 'sentimental' view of patriotism took hold at a crucial moment in the European history of the idea of the nation and of the conceptualisation of emotions. I argue that de Staël's ideas and influence lead us to a radical reconsideration of the significance of the emotional history of patriotism for how we explain nationalism.

Soldier's General: an extract from a profile of Lt Gen. Hanut Singh PVSM, MVC / Force   Journal Article
Force Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Describing his first meeting with Hanut in July 1956, Lieutenant General Ajai Singh who later became a governor, has written in the book, Fakhr-e-Hind: The Story of the Poona Horse: It was after two to three days of my stay in the Regiment that I met him. I was sitting in the C Squadron office after the Maintenance Parade when a tall, thin, smartly turned out officer entered the office. What struck me most about him was his prominent hooked nose and the very proud and penetrating look in his eyes. He walked to me and met with such enthusiasm, warmth and affection that I felt as though we had known each other for ages… Thereafter, without further ado, he took me to the Squadron and introduced me to all members of his troop, which I was to take over. Having done this at the garages itself, he gave me a programme for my training which I was to commence from the next day; he also gave me a large bundle of books and précis which I was to read in my own time. I went through all this businesslike activity in a state of total shock because, till then, such a serious approach to professional matters had neither been seen nor heard during the few days I had spent in the Regiment.
