Educating young women: culture, conflict, and new identities in an Iranian village / Hegland, Mary Elaine   Journal Article
Hegland, Mary Elaine Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Anthropological participant observation during two different periods (1978-79 and 2003-08) documents dramatic change in gender identity and expectations in an Iranian village. While patriarchal definitions of females and their places and on-the-ground social conditions restricted female agency and kept women and girls under the authority of male supervisors 30 years ago, recent years have witnessed growing opportunities for females. Now most girls complete high school before marriage, and may even travel to other cities for higher education. In "Aliabad," however, for the great majority, more education for females has not led to participation in the labor market. Ethnographic research focuses on how young females negotiate between the more traditional expectations and cultural constraints and the new opportunities to serve their own interests as best as possible. Although work outside of the home presents too many difficulties for the great majority of Aliabad females, who must marry in order to obtain financial support, females have used their education and the increased self-confidence, experience, status, and literacy to develop more influential positions within the marriage relationship, among kin and in-laws, and in the community. Young village women have been involved in constructing their evolving identities in an environment of social change and modernization.

0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The recent female literacy and fertility levels in Kerala state are examined using the 2011 census data. Arriaga’s approach for estimation of age-specific fertility rates is undertaken to show the particularities of Kerala state and the best practices which made this state an example for other states in India as well as other places in the world, particularly developing countries. Women’s empowerment gets as much credit as physical facilities and family planning programs; this empowerment level of women is also related to their level of education.

Love, life, and “leftover ladies” in urban China: staying modernly single in patriarchal traditions / You, Jing; Yi, Xuejie; Chen, Meng   Journal Article
Chen, Meng Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The population in urban China has shown rising age at first marriage and declining marriage rates, especially among college educated professional women who are in their late 20s or their 30s. We investigate the determinants of marriage formation for urban women aged 27 or above who tend to be termed “leftover ladies”. We estimate a recursive mixed-equation model to describe correlated profiles of career, education and marriage. Conventional social norms on gender, especially patriarchy, still prevail. Factors that are not favorable for a conventionally wifely role reduce women's likelihood of marriage. In particular, we reveal a “marital college-discount” of college education. It reduces the probability of marriage by 2.88%–3.6% and a postgraduate degree further oppresses it by 8.4%–10.4%. Favorable characteristics such as facial attractiveness only raises the likelihood of marriage formation for non-college educated women, while pushing up non-marriage probabilities for women with at least college degrees.
