2011 Panchayat elections in Kashmir: a case for democratic de-centralisation / Wani, Aijaz Ashraf   Journal Article
Wani, Aijaz Ashraf Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract A working democratic set-up provides ample space to mitigate the tensions in a society to a large extent. Unfortunately, democracy could not work in Jammu and Kashmir the way it is expected to work in a free society. Denial of democracy and misgovernance became almost an accepted way of political life in the state, which became one of the main reasons of the rise of militancy in the state. The 2011 panchayat elections provide the best opportunity to restore the confidence of the people in the democratic set-up by empowering the elected representatives in a real sense and bringing more and more people into the democratic setup. It also poses a great challenge to the government as far as fulfilling the democratic aspirations of the common people who have whole heartedly participated in this democratic exercise at the local level.

Adoption of grid-connected solar rooftop systems in the state of Jammu and Kashmir: a stakeholder analysis. / Dutta, Aaina; Das, Sukanya   Journal Article
Dutta, Aaina Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Renewable energy is being seen as a transformative solution to meet energy as well as economic challenges at national as well as at a global level. The Government of India has expressed its intent to achieve 100 GW of solar capacity in the country by 2020. However, one such state that lags in harnessing and achieving the solar targets is the state of Jammu and Kashmir despite having the second highest potential of solar energy. Jammu and Kashmir is a power deficit state though it has one of the best potentials in solar energy. Solar rooftop PV systems can solve most of the problems regarding power deficit, but yet people are naïve about solar rooftop PV systems. The purpose of this study is to perform stakeholder analysis to investigate the perceptions of the groups/individuals regarding grid connected solar rooftop PV systems. They have a critical impact on the result of the study as they provide fundamental data on the political, social and economic scenario of any study area. The findings from the investigation underscores that all the projects and programs related to the adoption of a solar rooftop system should concentrate on building awareness.

AFSPA – an oxymoron in a democratic polity and a Human Rights issue / Mukhim, Patricia   Journal Article
Mukhim, Patricia Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) dates back to 1958 when it was passed by the Indian Parliament to quell the Naga rebellion in a so-called disturbed area. Later it was extended to the states of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, parts of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and later to Jammu and Kashmir in 1990. This Act is a legacy of a colonial power. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Ordinance, 1942, was used by the British to quell dissent during the Second World War. But even before that it was used as an instrument of repression which led to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. It is ironic that a free country would be waging a war against its own people using all forms of brutality to secure the nation-building agenda of the State. Why else would you use the military for an internal rebellion?

Alteration of Article 370: Constitutional Questions and International Implications / Gupta, Alok Kumar   Journal Article
Gupta, Alok Kumar Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Imran Khan the Prime Minister of Pakistan was flying high and had developed a tinge of aggressiveness in his diplomatic offensives after Trump’s offer of ‘mediation’ on Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), where Donald Trump, the American President allegedly also quoted Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India that he too has asked for mediation. While the Trump’s statement led to a furore in India, Imran in Pakistan started preparing ground for securing international backing on Kashmir. However, he never anticipated that Modi’s Government would drop a ‘bombshell’ by rendering Articles 370 and 35A infructuous. Pakistan used this as an opportunity in connivance with China to take the issue to the United States Security Council (UNSC).
