Resolving the Palestinian refugee issue has been too long neglected and delayed. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians live in degradation and despair, and many live in limbo, awaiting a political solution to problems created more than 60 years ago when Israel came into existence.
What to do? Some put forward South Africa's one-man one-vote one-state as a solution: Israel must disappear, it is argued, to be replaced by a single Jewish-Arab state; all Palestinian refugees must have the right to return to this state if they want to and must have the right to reclaim property they lost in 1948.
This is a siren's voice, sounded only by ignoring realities and brushing aside the fact that South Africa and Israel/Palestine have different histories and different peoples and what has been successful for one doesn't spell success for the other. One size does not fit all.

S ince the publication of S hared H istories 1 in 2005, the narratives of the various sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have become both a cottage industry 2 and a common catchphrase 3 used frequently even by negotiators and politicians. However, the concept of narratives as a working tool in the peace process has not yet been taken on board by those involved in resolving the conflict.

Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is temporary, at least in theory, so in line with international law the pre-1967 legal system remains in place. Thus, Jordanian law determines military cases — except where changed or supplemented by the 1,700 or so orders issued by the Israel Defense Forces since the start of the occupation.

Nelson Mandela's death set off a rush by many in the world to search for lessons in his life, and none have been more eager to do so than Israelis and Palestinians trapped in their conflict. The Importance of Balanced and Compassionate Leadership. The most obvious lesson he offers lies in the critical nature of leadership. After 27 years of imprisonment he emerged into a South Africa torn by violence as the black majority struggled for freedom against a ruling white minority. He quelled the anger among his own people and led them on the path of compromise and reconciliation. His courage and vision earned the respect and support of most whites, which allowed for the rise of a new united South Africa of democracy and non-racism.
