China's Opening up after 40 Years: standing at a historic turning point / Ju, Jiandong; Yu, Xinding   Journal Article
Ju, Jiandong Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This paper comprehensively reviews China's openness since 1978 from three aspects: trade, foreign investment and global production sharing. We point out that the economic development of China is now standing at a historic turning point. Specifically, economic changes in China are discussed from four dimensions: (i) from China being a world assembly line to a world manufacturing powerhouse; (ii) from China being a world capital receiver to a world investor; (iii) from China being a world factory to a world market; and (iv) from the situation of “made in China” to “innovated in China.” At the same time, the global economic system has also reached a turning point. A “North America–Europe–Asia” tri‐polar system has formed, in which the USA, Germany and China, respectively, serve as the regional core economies.

Global Production Sharing and Sino-US Trade Relations / Athukorala, Prema-chandra; Yamashita, Nobuaki   Journal Article
Athukorala, Prema-Chandra Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This paper examines Sino-US trade relations, focusing on the ongoing process of global production sharing, involving splitting of the production process into discrete activities that are then allocated across countries, and the resulting trade complementarities between the two countries in world manufacturing trade. The results suggest that the Sino-US trade imbalance is basically a structural phenomenon resulting from the pivotal role played by China as the final assembly centre in East Asia-centered global production networks

Intra-regional FDI and economic integration in South Asia: trends, patterns and prospects / Athukorala, Prema-chandra   Journal Article
Athukorala, Prema-Chandra Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This article examines trends and patterns of intra-regional foreign direct investment (FDI) in South Asia, with a focus on the potential for integrating production processes among countries in the region through further trade and investment policy reforms. The empirical evidence pieced together from scattered sources suggests that horizontal (market seeking) FDI has continued to dominate South Asian intra-regional FDI, with a significant shift in recent years in favour of services sector activities. Vertical (efficiency seeking) FDI in the region has remained confined to a few product lines, predominately garments, and also a few industries in which the availability of specific natural resources plays an important role in the site selection decisions of firms. In other industries, including electronics and electrical goods in which global production sharing is heavily concentrated, there is no evidence of notable cross-border operations by regional firms.
