Abduction of Europe / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article
Oganesyan, Armen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract WE ARE WATCHING the "abduction of Europe": the European dream of many generations of great European politicians is melting away. It was immediately after the war that Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Konrad Adenauer, Paul-Henri Spaak and many others laid the ideological foundation of united Europe. In 1962, Harold Macmillan disappointed his audience by saying to the EEC prime ministers that his country was determined to integrate into Europe. The British primer was convinced that his country could look forward to economic growth only as part of a big continental bloc. Today, the British press has dismissed this as a superficial and short-sighted approach which nevertheless was accepted by the larger part of the establishment and which cost dearly to the nation. The Brits, however, are often pushed aside as an insular nation. Le Monde of France betrays its concern by asking "Will Europe repeat the history of the USSR?" It admits, with a great deal of bitterness, that the integration institutes and Euro-bureaucracy which have grown out of proportion "are treated in Europe at best with indifference or at worst are totally rejected."

Summary/Abstract AMERICAN AUTHOR Anne O'Hare McCormick (1880-1954), whose life experience was interwoven with both world wars, packaged into a single phrase the lessons to be derived from the tumultuous epochs when she famously wrote: "Today the real test of power is not capacity to make war but the capacity to prevent it."

Atomized caliphate" in Europe / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article
Oganesyan, Armen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract A PART OF THE WESTERN WORLD, Europe, however, has been very selective about alien cultures and civilizations; not a "melting pot" American style, it is paying dearly for this function imposed on it. The disagreements on the migration issues in the European corridors of power threaten the cohesion of the European Unity. Frau Merkel who demonstrated a no mean determination to meet a new wave of migrants with maximal openness and tolerance had already accepted the failure of mul-ticulturalism.

Summary/Abstract PATROCLUS LAY DEAD while Achaeans and Trojans were still fighting over his body. Today, the controversy over Margaret Thatcher's heritage is going on unabated. The Conservative press has placed the former prime minister on a high pedestal under the slogan Back to Thatcherism. The Labor media, however, firmly relegated the Iron Lady into the past and turned this page of history declaring the former premier forever confined in the narrow British context.

Barack Obama: "at a crossroads between war and peace" / Oganesyan, Armen   Article
Oganesyan, Armen Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract DURING his 40-minute-long address to the UN General Assembly, President Obama sounded less like a president and more like a prophet" or a preacher with a mission to reveal the truth about the world to mankind. The host is expected to be restrained, especially in view of the realities of the day. This time, the host pushed aside all rules to confirm the old truth that weaker positions are defended by stronger rhetoric. It seems that time has come for the UN Security Council and General Assembly to revise the tradition of long introductory speeches. Indeed, people who represent the world community are exposed to endless bragging and all sorts of opinions voiced by the leader of one, even if the most influential, country.

Burying the middle class, or the fall of the golden billion / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract THE CURRENT ECONOMIC DOWNTURN, like others before it, has shattered many dreams. But this is the first to have devastated so many people at once, regardless of class or social status - from pauper to prince. Thanks, globalization. Well, globalization is not entirely to blame. A crisis like the present one has never befallen such an affluent society, one that has become accustomed to prosperity and opportunities on a mass scale. Despite the tensions of the Cold War (or possibly thanks to them), the decades of postwar stability generated an unprecedented surge in technology and consumption. Ordinary Europeans and Americans had been breathing the illusory air of the "end of history" long before Francis Fukuyama made his famous prophecy.

Children and the "dark side" of the internet / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article
Oganesyan, Armen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract TODAY, the international community devotes considerable attention to the political, military and economic aspects of cyber security. This is only natural. Disruption of critical infrastructure, cyber espionage, hacking attacks on big business and the banking sector - indeed, these are extremely acute problems now. However, let's talk about a no less important aspect of information security, its humanitarian dimension, specifically the security of children and teenagers on the Internet. There is a well-known expression: "Children are our future." There can be no sustainable development of the state or the international community as a whole unless children, as the most vulnerable social group, are provided appropriate protection and rights in cyberspace. It may be recalled that, according to expert estimates, every third Internet user in the world is under the age of 18. This is a substantial figure.

Summary/Abstract Armen Oganesyan, editor-in-chief of International Affairs: It was Bishop Nestor's idea to hold this roundtable. He initiated, inspired, and blessed this event, so he has the floor to give welcoming remarks. Nestor, Bishop of Yalta: Starting is always hard, but finishing is even harder, because everything in this world has a beginning but continues into eternity. By starting, I mean taking the first step in trying to understand our reality. It's an extremely complex and convoluted reality - more complex than the Soviet or any other reality. Therefore, our self-identification and self-assertion is our main spiritual and moral task. And this requires intellectual courage and the resolve to maintain one's identity in our rather difficult environment.

Contemporary integration processes in the Post-Soviet space / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article
Oganesyan, Armen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract THIS IS THE SEVENTH TIME we are meeting in Yalta for what has already become a traditional international conference organized by the journal International Affairs with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This time, our discussion is focused on the specifics of contemporary integration processes in the post-Soviet space. A quarter of a century has passed since the disintegration of the USSR and the formation of the CIS. This is a considerable historical period that gives us food for thought and discussion, as a result of which we could not only draw conclusions regarding the status quo of the Commonwealth but also outline its development paths for the future. At the same time, it is obvious that we are going through a very complex and dynamic stage that is leading to deeper integration.

Summary/Abstract COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, we are grateful to you for your participation in our regular conference, which has already become traditional, on the distinctive features of modern processes in the post-Soviet space. This is our ninth conference. We will discuss regional security issues in the post-Soviet space; the advantages and benefits of the Silk Road running from China to Russia's northern shores via Central Asia; the issue of federalization; engagement with the Russian diaspora in the former Soviet republics, and the media component of modern politics. I wish you an interesting and meaningful discussion. And now, again in keeping with tradition, I give the floor to Russian Foreign Ministry representative, Alexey Drobinin, deputy director of the Foreign Policy Planning Department, who will read a message of greetings from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the participants of our conference.

Summary/Abstract WE OPEN this 11th Yalta international conference of the journal International Affairs. It is taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic. But since the situation has begun to normalize, we are able to gather here in Yalta, on the Black Sea, as usual, to discuss issues of integration in the post-Soviet space. Unfortunately, well-known circumstances both here and abroad relating to the pandemic have prevented participants from other countries from being here in person. But I hope that we will be able to communicate with them online, despite technical issues.

Summary/Abstract ESTEEMED COLLEAGUES, today we are meeting here in Yalta for the fifth time at an annual conference organized by the International Affairs journal with support from the Russian Foreign Ministry. At our meetings we discuss the concept of "Eurasianism" both as an idea and as the realization of this idea on the practical level. Every year, our discussion brings something new to the understanding and assessment of integration processes in the post-Soviet space regarding a broad spectrum of political, economic and humanitarian ties. Every year, the makeup of our participants renews and expands both numerically and geographically. Every year, we say good-bye only to meet here on the Crimean land again next fall. Today, this conference is especially important for us, as it is taking place in totally new geopolitical conditions. We have gathered again in Yalta, in Crimea, but this time on Russian land. I am looking forward to a lively and productive discussion. I would like to give the floor to Dmitry Alexeevich Polyansky.

Current situation in Ukraine and prospects for its development a year after the normandy format summit in paris: Russian and Czech experts' roundtable / Oganesyan, Armen   Journal Article
Oganesyan, Armen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract A YEAR AGO, the leaders of Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine met in Paris to discuss and establish certain agreements for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The "Normandy Format" meeting at such a high level suggested an impending breakthrough of the impasse in the southeastern Ukraine, but the Ukrainian side backpedaled once again, abandoning the already signed agreements. The civil war in Ukraine is still a bone of contention between Russia and Europe, affecting the security of the entire European region. The domestic conflict continues to destroy the Ukrainian state and economy while further splintering the country's population. What's next for Ukraine and the Donbass? To what extent is the Minsk process working for its participants?

Summary/Abstract ON 25 AUGUST 1952, Stalin received French Ambassador Louis Joxe for a working meeting at which the ambassador in reply to Stalin's question about the nature of NATO from Charles de Gaulle's perspective hinted that the bloc was an absolutely peaceful structure strictly within the UN Charter. "Stalin laughed and asked Vyshinsky, who was present during the conversation, whether the U.S.S.R. should join it then." Nikolai Kochkin who had spent some time in the Russian Foreign Ministry's archives pointed out: "From every indication, it was simply irony, but it cannot be ruled out that Stalin had some latent intentions" (Mezhdunarodnaia zhizn, No. 1-2, 2009, www.interaffiars.ru). In 1951, Andrei Gromyko repeatedly stated: "If this pact was aimed against the restoration of German aggression, the U.S.S.R. would join NATO."

Summary/Abstract A WEEK BEFORE TRIPOLI FELL to the insurgents, a glamour model and ex-girlfriend of Mutassim, one of Colonel Gaddafi's sons, had come to the Libyan capital. Talitha van Zon, the former Playboy centerfold, who claimed that she had parted with Mutassim Gaddafi several years ago, could not explain why she came to the country torn apart by a civil war. In any case very soon the toasts to a victory over the rebels were drowned out by the sounds of shooting and shouts by the same rebels at doors of her hotel. "The Dutch model was then paraded in front of rebel fighters who chanted 'petrol.' She feared they would 'burn her alive' and then made a desperate escape by leaping from the hotel's balcony" breaking her hand. Rescued by a Dutch journalist who helped her, together with other refugees to leave the country on a humanitarian ship, she reached Malta. The media all over the world informed their readers and viewers that "glamour model ex-girlfriend of Gaddafi's son escapes rebels after they threatened to 'burn her alive'" the reports supplied with a lavish selection of her photos.

Summary/Abstract THE SMOKE OF BURNING PEAT BOGS and forests and the losses they caused detracted us for a while from the far from comforting picture of planetary dimensions. Here is the frightening statistics of the year 2010 when big and small catastrophes shook the world: erupting volcanoes grounded aircrafts all over Europe; earthquakes hit many countries; the record-hot summer caused drought in Russia while Europe was nearly inundated. This suggests a logical question: what next? Indeed, to be prepared we should know what is in store for us. The answer is simple: anything might happen.
