Summary/Abstract |
Pakistani military operations against Taliban forces in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas(FATA) are unlikely to weaken Pakistan's intericcately interwoven militant network. Beyond the country's north-west, a web of militant groups and individuals continue to plan and carry out attacks. The co-operation that has been evident between these groups in recent years has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between them.

Summary/Abstract |
On 31 May, the Al-Qaeda franchise claimed its first Western victim in Mali when British tourist Dyer was executed. Captured across the Niger border on 22 January, Dyer had been held in northeast Mali.Given that 37 other Westerners have been ransomed since 2003, his death appeared to be a clear signal that the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)faction established in Mali were more than just criminal opportunists. The fact that his execution was apparently in response to the UK government refusing to release Jordanian militant cleric Abu Qatada seemed to support this.

Summary/Abstract |
As discussion continues over the need to increase the numbers within Afghanistan's army and police, a new form of ground-level security force is being trialled in Wardak province, neighbouring Kabul.Despite initial negative expectations, the small force has succeeded in gaining a foothold. Should this new approach prove successful, it may be rolled out into other provinces, acting as a template for greater community involvement in providing security.

Summary/Abstract |
The ethnic violence that killed at least 197 people in Urumqi, capital of China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR),
in early July is a stark reminder of the centrifugal forces pulling at China's centre. While China's overwhelming security forces were able to end the violence, the unrest highlighted the widespread discontent among the Uighur population in the XUAR, The once-majority Uighurs remain disconcerted by the migration of Han Chinese to the western region, which threatens to overwhelm them demographically and culturally.
