Methodological lessons learned from conducting civic education / Matto, Elizabeth C; Vercellotti, Timothy   Journal Article

0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract With the growing size of the "Millennial Generation" and its potential impact on American democracy, the civic education of this cohort deserves study. Using news media and discussion of politics at home and in the classroom at four public high schools in New Jersey, we conducted an experiment to measure changes in media use, political knowledge, and political efficacy. Although the experiment generated useful substantive findings, we also learned important lessons about the challenges associated with conducting research in high schools. We present suggestions to aid in studying a crucial segment of the population: adolescents who are on the cusp of entering the electorate.

Voter-Identification requirements and the learning curve / Vercellotti, Timothy; Andersen, David   Journal Article
Andersen, David Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Debates over whether to require voters to provide proof of identity at the polls, and just how that can be accomplished, are taking place in legislative chambers and courtrooms across the nation. At the heart of these debates is the balancing act of ballot security versus access to voting. Opponents of voter-identification requirements argue that they place a disproportionate burden on ethnic and racial minorities, the poor, the less educated, the very young, and the very old. Supporters of identification requirements argue the standards are no higher than those required for boarding a plane or cashing a check, and the requirements are needed to prevent voter fraud.
