Summary/Abstract THE IAEA IS TODAY one of the key mechanisms which keeps in motion the entire machinery of non-proliferation and expands international cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The IAEA's job is to ensure that signatories to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (Non-Proliferation Treaty), which have no nuclear weapons, fulfill their obligations under the Treaty and not divert from their civilian programs in favor of military programs. The IAEA also creates the necessary conditions for these countries to get unhindered access to the benefits of nuclear technology for civilian purposes.
