Summary/Abstract By all means, this was a remarkabel victory of Congress. The party not only increased its seats, but also garnered more support from all corners of the country. It was not just a matter of chance that congress improved its tally in one or two states. However, it would be too early to say that there was a national wave in favour of congress and that this election indicates the begining of an end of coalition governments.

Summary/Abstract We used individual level survey data to examine the distribution of health insurance and other welfare programs by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu. Core DMK supporters were more likely to receive welfare benefits than swing voters and opposition loyalists. Political analysis is important to understand motivations for establishing these programs.
