Double-edged effects of the technology gap and technology spill: evidence from the Chinese industrial sector / Lai, Mingyong; Wang, Hua; Zhu, Shujin   Journal Article
Lai, Mingyong Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This paper proposes a new insight that the technology gap plays double-edged roles in the technology spillovers of foreign direct investment (FDI) through two channels, technology choice set and technology absorptive capability. Applying a multiple-threshold model, we examine the non-linear relationship between the technology gap and technology spillovers based on the provincial panel data of the Chinese industrial sector during 1993-2006. The empirical results support the hypothesis of two thresholds, which are 0.3071 and 0.5214 in terms of the technology gap respectively. The estimated thresholds indicate the sufficient absorptive capability is the premise for FDI technology spillovers. Moreover, it implies the marginal decrease of FDI technology spillover effects in the long run.

Export behaviour and firm productivity in China / Wang, Hua; Yang, Jingjing; Lai, Mingyong   Journal Article
Lai, Mingyong Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This study examines whether exporters become more productive through estimating a production function using Chinese firm-level data from 1997 to 2000. The results indicate that exporters are more productive and, more importantly, that export strategies promote the productivity of these firms. The test for the relative timing of export behaviour and gains in productivity provides strong evidence for the existence of learning-by-exporting effects rather than self-selection effects. These results are robust when controlling simultaneous bias and selection bias by using a fixed-effects model, SYS-GMM estimation and semi-parametric estimation.

Water pricing with household surveys: A study of acceptability and willingness to pay in Chongqing, China / Wang, Hua; Xie, Jian; Li, Honglin   Journal Article
Wang, Hua Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract In determining domestic water prices, policy makers frequently need to use demand-side information rather than only rely on supply-side data as previously did, and household surveys are often conducted to collect information on the demand side. This paper presents a multiple bounded discrete choice (MBDC) survey model for collecting information about acceptability of different water prices by different types of households and estimating households' willingness to pay for water service improvement. The results obtained from MBDC surveys can be directly utilized in the development of water pricing and subsidy policies. An empirical MBDC study is conducted in Chongqing, China, where domestic water service quality was seriously inadequate, but financial resources were insufficient to improve the service quality. With a survey of 1500 households in five suburban districts in Chongqing Municipality, this study shows that a significant increase in water price is economically feasible as long as the poorest households are properly subsidized. The analysis also indicates that the order in which hypothetical prices are presented to the respondents with the MBDC method can systematically affect the answers and should be taken into account when designing such survey instruments.
