66th United Nations general assembly session and the role of Ba: an evaluation / Sultana, Razia   Journal Article
Sultana, Razia Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Since its inception in 1945, the United Nations (UN) has been playing a pivotal role in restoring peace and maintaining security by taking several measures. One of the regular UN activities is to arrange the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) intending to gather all the Heads of States and Governments to discuss multiple challenging issues faced by the member states nationally and globally. As the continuation of the UN action, the 66th UNGA held in September 2011 came up with several pertinent issues like climate change, global recession, food crisis, nuclear safety and terrorism. Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also attended the 66th UNGA and proposed a six-point multi-dimensional peace model addressing a number of national and global vulnerabilities including poverty and hunger, inequality, climate change and terrorism. It is in this context that the paper tries to focus on the issues discussed in the 66th UNGA and give an assessment regarding the steps taken by the assembly considering its existing limitations. Concurrently, the paper takes an attempt to analyse the role of Bangladesh as a developing country in the 66th UNGA session. The paper argues that through arranging UNGA for more than 60 years, the UN still tries to provide a unique venue for the member countries to discuss complex national and global issues and solve international disputes. More importantly, it is a common platform for small countries like Bangladesh to raise their voice, place their demands and to work together against the common global challenges.

Summary/Abstract After winning a third consecutive term as prime minister in the compromised December 2018 general election, Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League continues to consolidate one-woman rule. Throughout 2019, Hasina continued to persecute critics and opponents. Despite the deepening malaise of bad governance, Bangladesh has continued to enjoy impressive economic growth. But it remains haunted by the desperate Rohingya exodus from Myanmar, and the decades-old Bihari question.

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract The Sheikh Hasina government has been able to crack down on militant outfits by initiating a process of de-radicalisation ever since it came to power in 2009. This has been evident from the fact that since 2009 the violent activities of the Islamic extremists have been curtailed with relatively little bloodshed. And the same has been the case with the left wing extremists in the country. The Sheikh Hasina regime is more determined, than any government since the formation of Bangladesh to de-radicalise the political as well as the social structure of Bangladesh. This paper will describe and analyse eradicalisation process underway in Bangladesh and the emerging challenges.

Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Waiting to meet Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her suite in a Manhattan hotel, I hear a baby's cries coming from the bedroom. Ms. Hasina, an aide tells me, is feeding her grand-daughter and will be with me shortly. Ms. Hasina enters the room dressed elegantly in a lime-green sari, and settles into an armchair. Behind her is a framed photograph of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, or "Father of the Nation," serving as a reminder of the bloody past of Ms. Hasina and of Bangladesh. The country's first prime minister after separation from what was then called West Pakistan, his wife and Ms. Hasina's three brothers were assassinated in 1975.

India and Bangladesh: the road towards common peace and prosperity / Datta, Sreeradha   Journal Article
Datta, Sreeradha Journal Article

Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract After a hiatus, relations between India and Bangladesh are back on track again. This period was ushered in with the Awami League government assuming power in Dhaka after the culmination of the much delayed ninth Jatiya Sangsad elections. The bilateral relations received a further boost with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's four-day visit to India on January 10, 2010. It was breakthrough visit for a number of reasons. Not only was it Sheikh Hasina's first visit to India after taking over as prime minister on January 2009, but it has once one again lent the Indo-Bangladesh relations with a growing sense of optimism. The meetings between the leaders of India and Bangladesh radiated a spirit of goodwill that was singularly lacking in the bilateral context until recently. Apart from the positive atmospherics that this landmark visit has generated, the two sides have set forth a bilateral agenda that, if well implemented, will ensure the process of being development partners is ongoing and is not subject to regime compatibility.

Summary/Abstract There has been a clear paradigm shift in Indo-Bangladesh relations over the past few years, as now exemplified and concretised by the agreements signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Dhaka in June 2015. As Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said some time ago, it is the season of friendship in Indo-Bangladesh relations. It remains now to build further on the foundation that has been laid.

Problems of women's participation in Bangladesh politics / Chowdhury, Farah Deeba   Journal Article
Chowdhury, Farah Deeba Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract Women's participation in politics is extremely limited in Bangladesh despite the country having had two prominent women leaders. Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia gained the highest leadership positions in the government and the opposition through their family connections due to the low level of political institutionalization and the absence of suitable male heirs. By their family connections, they have overcome the problems that women otherwise face in politics. Why are Bangladeshi women not more prominent in politics? What are the problems women face when they participate in politics? Here the problems faced by women in politics in Bangladesh are analysed in both the public and the private spheres of patriarchy.
