Divination, Yijing, and Cultural Nationalism : the self-legitimation of divination as an aspect of “traditional culture” in post-mao China / Li, Geng   Journal Article
Li, Geng Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract By aligning themselves with the Book of Changes (易經 Yijing) and National Learning (國學 Guoxue), diviners in contemporary China regard themselves as protectors of “traditional culture” and promoters of “China’s national wisdom.” e alignment with the national tradition not only enhances divination’s social status, but also generates more prot for diviners and constructs a limited anity with ocial ideology. Diviners can shi their public image from being typical representatives of backward feudal superstition to being in the vanguard of a traditional culture that is essential to China’s national identity. All of this is occurring against the background of China’s national project of global reordering and promoting cultural nationalism. The reactivation of elements of the cultural patrimony is regarded as useful to legitimize state power and to fortify national cohesion. While popular religious practices oen maintain an alternative view to that of the state, they also develop connections with hegemonic discourses, dynamically and strategically.

Falling standard of values in the army: dilution of norms is the root cause / Suman, Mrinal   Journal Article
Suman, Mrinal Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract As human beings are a product of their environment and society, their interpretation of morals, ethics and value system differ. In a traditional culture like ours, attitudes are moulded by long-established practices, rituals and conventions. Group cohesion is a battle winning factor for a military. The Indian Army recruits officers and men from all parts of the country with diverse value systems and attitudes. It is well nigh impossible to weave them into a cohesive group without bringing them on to a common grid of conduct. Instead of attempting to supplant their concepts of morality, ethics and righteousness, it is considered wiser to steer their conduct through a set of organizational norms. Norms are well-evolved and time-tested rules that act as rational and judicious guiding principles. They must be followed diligently for the continued good health of a military.

Jiaohua, an Educational Practice in the “Confucian” Company / Fu, Lan Jiang   Journal Article
Fu, Lan Jiang Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Based on fieldwork carried out between 2016 and 2020 in three Chinese private companies, this article analyses the implementation of jiaohua, a key idea in Confucianism, within a “Confucian” company. In the first two sections, I analyse the main measures put in place by this type of company in their attempt to model and transform the behaviour and state of mind of their employees. I then study the way in which the educational vocation of these entrepreneurs fits into an educational project supported by the authorities at the national level, the aim of which is to create a morally sound citizen. Taking account of the current sociopolitical context in China, it might be considered that the commitment of certain private entrepreneurs to the promotion of a “Confucian education” reflects their contribution to the making of the modern citizen that the state desires, as well as their conviction that Confucianism offers resources that will enable the construction of a Chinese capitalist ethic.
