Japan’s self-defense forces: a decade after reorganisation / Khera, Kishore Kumar   Journal Article
Khera, Kishore Kumar Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Japan banks heavily on her security alliance with the United States (US) to ensure availability of requisite military capability in the region. China’s economic and military capabilities have grown in the last two decades, closing the gap with the US. With diminishing differential, especially with respect to China, the US’ deterrence power has gradually declined. Under these conditions, Japan has to develop Self-Defense Forces (SDF) capabilities to ensure that it, in combination with its alliance partner, the US, is able to meet national security challenges. In a major shift in security policy, on 9 January 2007 Japan’s Parliament approved the upgradation of Defense Agency/SDF to a full-fledged ministry. However, the changes in the SDF, especially in its doctrine and roles, have been gradual. Till SDF graduates to have an offensive capability that can deter capably, the US will continue to be a key player in Japan’s security milieu.

Kargil to Balakot: the tumultuous journey of Indian air power / Khera, Kishore Kumar   Journal Article
Khera, Kishore Kumar Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The conceptual and capability changes in a kinetic force remain intertwined with the prevailing and emerging security scenarios. Air power, a key kinetic capability, being technology dependent, needs continuous re-equipping and up gradation. The force structure and organisation too need to adapt to ensure optimal exploitation of available capability. Indian air power has transformed in the last two decades and expanded its capability in all critical facets. The Indian Air Force, in particular, has positioned itself to deliver the punch that today’s geopolitics may require: swift, deep, effective, precise, and contained in terms of collateral. With the changing character of war, there is a need to relook at the capability growth plan for air power for it to be relevant in future. With finite financial outlays, rebalancing various facets of air power is essential to achieve the desired end goal.
